Rebecca Gayheart’s Heartbreaking Tribute: Eric Dane’s ALS Battle & Final Photos

Rebecca Gayheart, the former wife of the late actor Eric Dane, has offered a poignant glimpse into their family life following his passing at the age of 53. Dane succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease, less than a year after revealing his diagnosis. Known widely for his charismatic portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, or ‘McSteamy,’ on the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, Dane’s battle with the illness, colloquially referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease in America, was a private struggle until its advanced stages.

Despite their separation in 2017, Gayheart and Dane maintained an exceptionally close bond, united in their commitment to raising their daughters, Billie, now 15, and Georgia, 13. Their divorce proceedings were ultimately halted, a testament to their enduring connection, particularly as Dane navigated his health crisis. Gayheart remained a steadfast pillar of support throughout his final months, even as they both pursued other relationships. In a posthumously released interview for Netflix, Dane himself acknowledged their deep, continuing love for one another.

The collection of family photos shared by Gayheart paints a vivid picture of their shared history, spanning from the early days of their romance to their devoted co-parenting journey. One heartwarming snapshot captures a young Gayheart and Dane in their early relationship, relaxing with a toddler Billie, radiating domestic bliss. Another image depicts Dane celebrating a later birthday, surrounded by two cakes and the loving presence of Gayheart and their daughters. A nostalgic photograph shows the couple as a young pair, beaming in front of a Christmas tree, with one of their young daughters nestled in Gayheart’s arms.

In the wake of Dane’s death, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated by his friends to ensure financial support for his daughters. As of Saturday morning, the fund had garnered over $183,000 towards its $250,000 goal, underscoring the outpouring of generosity from his community. Adding to this support, it has been revealed that actor Johnny Depp offered Dane a sanctuary during his illness, allowing him to reside in one of Depp’s homes overlooking the Sunset Strip. A source close to the situation shared that Depp had told Dane to pay “whatever he could or — couldn’t for rent,” alleviating a significant financial worry for the actor.

Dane’s physical health had deteriorated significantly following his diagnosis. He was reliant on a wheelchair, had lost the use of one of his arms, and was forced to withdraw from a public appearance the previous month, citing the “physical realities” imposed by his condition. Despite these immense challenges, Dane, whose recent acting credits include portraying the father of Jacob Elordi’s character in the acclaimed series Euphoria, expressed a resolute determination to continue acting as recently as December.

“I still have my brain and I still have my speech,” he stated during a virtual panel for IAMALS.org. “I’m not about to concede my purpose for some disease.”

His final message to his daughters was secretly recorded for a posthumous Netflix special titled Famous Last Words: Eric Dane. In the heartfelt recording, he spoke directly to Billie and Georgia, his voice filled with emotion: “Billie and Georgia, these words are for you: I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall, we had a blast, didn’t we?”

Dane then imparted four profound life lessons he wished to share with his daughters:

Four Pillars of Wisdom for His Daughters

  1. Live in the Present: Dane urged his daughters to embrace the “right now.” He admitted to years spent mentally adrift, consumed by worry, self-pity, shame, and doubt, often replaying past decisions and second-guessing himself. He described a turning point where he declared “No more,” a shift in mindset born from a “pure survival” instinct. This lesson highlights the importance of mindfulness and letting go of past regrets to fully engage with life as it unfolds.
  2. Fall in Love (with Something): Beyond romantic love, Dane encouraged his daughters to discover a passion or a pursuit that ignites their spirit. He recounted finding his own calling in acting around their age and advised them to seek out “your passion, your joy. Find the thing that makes you wanna get up in the morning.” This speaks to the power of purpose and finding fulfillment in one’s endeavors.
  3. Choose Your Friends Wisely: Dane emphasized the critical role of genuine connection, urging his daughters to “find your people and allow them to find you and then give yourselves to them.” He described the invaluable support of friends who offer “no judgement. No conditions. No questions asked.” He expressed profound gratitude for the friends who “stepped up” during his illness and implored his daughters to “just show up. And love your friends with everything you have. Hang on to them. They will entertain you, guide you, support you and some will save you.” This lesson underscores the profound impact of meaningful friendships.
  4. Fight with Every Ounce of Your Being: Facing life’s inevitable challenges, Dane’s final exhortation was to “fight with every ounce of your being and with dignity.” He counselled them to confront adversity, whether health-related or otherwise, with unwavering resolve. “Never give up. Fight until your last breath,” he implored. He acknowledged the insidious nature of his disease, stating, “This disease is slowly taking my body, but it will never take my spirit.” His message was one of resilience, urging them to face unexpected hurdles with “honesty, integrity and grace, even if it feels or seems insurmountable.”

The San Francisco-born actor’s voice wavered as he reflected on his own journey, expressing the hope that he had demonstrated how to “face anything. You can face the end of your days. You can face hell with dignity.” He concluded his message with a powerful plea: “Fight girls, and hold your heads high.”

His final words, delivered with immense love and a touch of sorrow, were directed towards his daughters: “Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words.”
