A series of thefts targeting traffic control equipment disrupted several key intersections in Batam City, raising safety concerns for road users. The incidents occurred in a single night on Wednesday (March 25, 2026) at around 8:30 p.m., with perpetrators striking strategic locations including Simpang Calista, Simpang KDA, and the Simpang Jam flyover.
The suspects are believed to have dismantled traffic light control boxes and stolen several critical components. Field findings showed that panels were left open, cables were hanging loose, and several main modules were missing. The damage caused significant disruption to traffic management systems in the affected areas.
Head of Batam Transportation Agency, Leo Putra, through Head of Traffic Division Faisal Novrieco, stated that the incident was not an isolated case. He emphasized that similar patterns of theft often occur during long holiday periods.
“This kind of incident frequently happens during major holidays such as Eid, Christmas, and New Year. We suspect the perpetrators are part of an organized group,” Faisal said on Friday (March 27, 2026).
According to him, the perpetrators mainly target high-value components, including copper cables, controller modules, and other electrical equipment. The theft was also captured by nearby surveillance cameras (CCTV).
The impact of the incident was immediately felt. Several traffic lights failed to operate properly, with some going completely offline or only blinking. This situation increases the risk of accidents and traffic congestion, particularly at busy intersections.
In addition to traffic infrastructure, acts of vandalism were also reported in the Masjid Agung Batam Center area. The public facility was targeted by irresponsible individuals, adding to the list of damages recorded during the same period.
The Batam Transportation Agency is currently coordinating with law enforcement authorities to investigate the case. Emergency repairs are also being carried out to restore normal traffic operations and ensure road user safety.
Faisal urged the public to help safeguard public facilities and to report any suspicious activities around public infrastructure.
