Kate Garraway’s Awkward Pedalo Encounter Over Phillip Schofield’s Vape
During a recent, rather unconventional interview, television presenter Kate Garraway found herself in a decidedly uncomfortable situation when questioned about her former ITV colleague, Phillip Schofield. The seasoned broadcaster, known for her role on Good Morning Britain and her stint on the inaugural season of Celebrity Traitors, was a guest on the BBC programme What Have You Done? with Chi + Lucas.
This unique show, hosted by Lucia Keskin and Jamie Bisping in their comedic personas as Chi and Lucas from the sitcom Things You Should Have Done, sees celebrities interviewed while seated in a pedalo. The premise revolves around discussing “the things they wish they’d done with their lives,” making for inherently unpredictable and often chaotic conversations. As expected, Garraway’s chat with the duo was no exception.
The core of the awkwardness arose when the hosts probed the 58-year-old presenter about a rather specific shared item: a Lost Mary vape. This question came in the wake of Schofield’s 2023 departure from his presenting duties on This Morning, a move that followed revelations of an “unwise but not illegal” affair with a younger employee on the show.
Garraway’s initial response was a visibly awkward smile, followed by a simple, “No, I haven’t.” However, the hosts were not about to let the matter rest.
“We did once,” remarked Lucas, prompting Chi to add, “Completely accidental though.” When Garraway, clearly intrigued and perhaps a little flustered, inquired how this accidental shared vaping experience came about, Lucas recounted the story. “He left it down. We pick it up. We’re having a puff or two. He comes back and he’s like ‘That’s my Lost Mary’. Anyway, three drinks later and we’re all laughing about it.” Chi then interjected, with a hint of dry humour, “And then he gets fired from This Morning.” Garraway’s reaction was a non-verbal shrug, her lips sealed, as she looked at the pair, the unspoken weight of the situation hanging in the air.
The clip of this peculiar exchange quickly circulated online, eliciting a range of reactions. Laura Jane Northmore described it as “one of the best questions anybody has ever asked,” highlighting the unexpected nature of the inquiry. Others expressed sheer astonishment, with one commenter stating, “Never in my wildest dreams did I expect the camera to turn around and Kate Garraway to be sat there.”
@its_chloe_uk noted Garraway’s attempt to maintain composure, commenting, “Love how she [Garraway] tried to hold it together.”
Phillip Schofield’s departure from This Morning was followed by a series of interviews where he addressed the controversy. Notably, during his interview with The Sun, Schofield was observed frequently using a Lost Mary vape, taking drags between his answers. In that same conversation, he disclosed the presence of calluses and blisters on his hands, admitting he had been “vaping, a lot.”
Similarly, Amol Rajan, who interviewed Schofield for the BBC, also commented on the former ITV star’s reliance on the vape, noting that he was reaching for it before, after, and even during breaks in their recording session.
Schofield’s statement upon his resignation from This Morning articulated his understanding of ITV’s decision and his desire to protect the show. He stated, “I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love. So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future.”
