Giants Gear Up for Pies Showdown

GWS Giants Ready to Unleash Full Potential Against Magpies

Greater Western Sydney (GWS) playmaker Ryan Angwin has declared his teammates are primed to shed any lingering reservations and unleash their trademark high-octane style of play as they aim to reignite their AFL campaign. The Giants have experienced a challenging fortnight, suffering convincing defeats at the hands of the Western Bulldogs and then falling short in a spirited comeback bid against St Kilda. This recent slump has placed Adam Kingsley’s men in a precarious position heading into another significant clash against the formidable Collingwood Magpies at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

Angwin conceded that GWS had strayed from their established identity in their most recent outings. However, he pointed to the second half of their match against St Kilda as a source of optimism.

“We thrive on playing with the handbrake off,” Angwin told the press. “It’s about injecting more freedom into our game and significantly increasing the speed at which we move the ball and transition through the game. This is a style we’ve cultivated and relied upon for the past three to four years, and it’s been noticeably absent over the last two weeks. Our immediate priority is to recapture that momentum and implement it effectively against Collingwood.”

The Magpies, meanwhile, have received a significant boost with the long-awaited return of captain Darcy Moore and fellow key defender Jeremy Howe. This marks the first appearance of the season for both stalwarts, who have successfully overcome their respective injury concerns.

Under the guidance of coach Craig McRae, Collingwood enters this fixture after an early-season bye. This upcoming match represents a rare opportunity for them to play on their home turf at the AFL-owned Marvel Stadium, with an anticipated parochial crowd expected to provide a vociferous welcome for the visiting Giants during the prime-time slot.

“We actually embrace the travel aspect, and we don’t often get the opportunity to play many night games. So, securing a Friday night fixture against a team like Collingwood is a substantial occasion for our club,” Angwin commented. “As players, we relish these moments. Collingwood is an exceptionally strong side, so this presents a tremendous challenge. We absolutely need to get our system firing on all cylinders, and there’s no better platform to do that than on a Friday night against a quality opponent.”

The GWS Giants have been significantly hampered by a considerable injury list throughout the current season. In response, they have named teenager Ollie Hannaford to make his highly anticipated debut. Additionally, the versatile James Leake has been recalled for his first game of the season. However, Jack Buckley remains unavailable due to concussion protocols, and Harry Rowston has been omitted from the squad. Earlier in the week, coach Kingsley had indicated the potential return of Aaron Cadman, Brent Daniels, and Toby Bedford from injury layoffs, but none of the trio have been selected for this match.

Collingwood will also see a debutant in their ranks, with ruckman Oscar Steene set to take the field for the first time. The Magpies have made further changes, with Wil Parker, Ed Allan, and Jack Buller all being dropped from the side.

The GWS Giants are acutely aware of the challenge ahead but are determined to shift gears and display the dynamic, free-flowing football that has become their hallmark. The clash against Collingwood presents the perfect opportunity to prove they can compete with the league’s elite when playing at their full capacity. The prospect of a Friday night game, coupled with the desire to rectify their recent form, provides ample motivation for the Giants to leave it all on the field and potentially disrupt Collingwood’s strong start to the season. The return of key personnel for both sides promises a compelling contest, with the Giants eager to make a statement and get their AFL aspirations back on track.
