A Lavish Wedding Spanning Two Continents
Amal Fashanu, the daughter of former England footballer John Fashanu, is preparing for a lavish wedding that will span two continents and take place over three days. The event will see her marry Mohamad Odaymat, a Ghanaian billionaire businessman, in a celebration that combines traditional Nigerian and Spanish customs.
The couple has already tied the knot legally in a small courthouse ceremony, but they are now planning a grander event to mark their union. Amal revealed that the main ceremony will take place on May 7 next year, with the first leg held in Lagos, Nigeria, where her father lives, and the second in Madrid, Spain, home to her mother, Marisol Acuna Duenas.
Reconnecting with Her Father
Amal and her father had a long-standing feud, but the recent decline in his health prompted them to reconcile. John Fashanu, now 63, has been battling a mysterious condition that Amal believes may be linked to the many years he spent playing professional football, during which he headed thousands of balls.
Despite concerns about his health, John is expected to play a prominent role in the wedding celebrations. Amal hopes he will be fully recovered in time to walk her down the aisle. She also mentioned that she is considering hiring a private jet to transport guests between Nigeria and Spain, so they won’t have to bear the financial burden of travel.
A Celebration of Family and Culture
The wedding will bring together more than 600 guests, including family members from both sides of the world. Amal described the event as a three-day celebration of their families’ cultures, with plans for big-name performers to entertain the guests.
She also shared how the couple met through a mutual friend, Imani Ayew, who introduced her to Mohamad in Accra, Ghana. Their relationship blossomed quickly, and they became engaged nine months later. The couple’s initial wedding was a low-key affair, but the party ended up drawing more than 150 people.
A New Chapter for Amal and Her Family
Amal, who divides her time between the UK and Ghana, has also launched several business ventures, including a successful handbag line, a streetwear brand, and a trendy matcha concept store in Accra. She is now expanding her business by opening a second store in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
In addition to her entrepreneurial pursuits, Amal is working on a new project with her father. They are setting up a health and wellness clinic, with a football academy attached. Amal said this venture will keep her father active and engaged.
Healing Old Wounds
Amal and John had a difficult relationship, particularly after she accused him of signing up for ITV’s Dancing on Ice without her knowledge while she was acting as his agent. However, the recent focus on his health has brought them closer together.
John recently traveled back to the UK for medical tests conducted by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA). While the results were reassuring, Amal remains concerned about his well-being. She is considering moving him back to the UK for better medical care in the future.
Honoring a Legacy
Amal is also the founder of The Justin Fashanu Foundation, established in memory of her uncle, Justin Fashanu, who was the first openly gay professional footballer. He passed away in 1998 under tragic circumstances. Amal hopes to honor his memory during her wedding by releasing white doves.
