Soh Wooi Yik’s Instagram Bio Sparks Speculation, Lee Chong Wei Clarifies
A recent update to Malaysian men’s doubles star Soh Wooi Yik’s Instagram bio has ignited a flurry of speculation among fans, with many questioning whether it signals a potential departure from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). The subtle change, which reportedly now lists him simply as a “pro badminton player,” quickly caught the attention of the badminton community, leading to widespread discussion and concern.
However, Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, a retired Malaysian badminton legend and the current chairman of the BAM performance committee, has stepped in to quell the rumours. Lee Chong Wei, a figure synonymous with Malaysian badminton excellence, offered a different perspective on Soh Wooi Yik’s Instagram update, suggesting that the change was likely a straightforward reflection of his professional status rather than an indication of him leaving the national setup.
“For me, there is really nothing in it,” Lee Chong Wei stated, as reported by The Star. “Every country has a different culture, so when Wooi Yik puts ‘pro badminton player’ in his Instagram bio, many assume he is leaving the national team. But in my view, he is simply stating that he is a professional player because this is his career, just like other athletes around the world.”

While Lee Chong Wei acknowledged he wasn’t privy to Soh Wooi Yik’s exact motivations behind the bio change, he emphasised that the player’s profession is indeed badminton. The 43-year-old former world number one, currently on holiday, also referenced comments from the men’s doubles head coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, who has reportedly confirmed that there is no cause for alarm regarding Soh Wooi Yik’s status with BAM.
Underlying Concerns: A Recent Departure and Future Policies
The concerns surrounding Soh Wooi Yik’s social media activity, while seemingly addressed, are not entirely without basis. This speculation follows closely on the heels of another significant development within Malaysian badminton: the confirmed departure of Goh Pei Kee from the national association.
It was none other than Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei himself who confirmed Goh Pei Kee’s decision to step away from BAM. “Pei Kee has decided to stick with her decision. She is not coming back,” Chong Wei had stated, highlighting the reality of players choosing to leave the national system.
In light of such departures, BAM is reportedly exploring new strategies to retain its talent. The association is looking into measures to prevent players from exiting the national fold prematurely, especially those who have benefited significantly from BAM’s investment in their development.
“We want to try to prevent this from happening,” Lee Chong Wei explained. “For example, if a player joined BAM at 13 years old and is now 20 to 22 and has already made a name for themselves, BAM would have invested a lot in their career.” This suggests a potential shift in policy aimed at ensuring greater commitment from players who have been nurtured by the association from a young age.
The ongoing discussions around player retention and the interpretation of social media updates underscore the dynamic nature of professional sports and the constant balancing act between individual aspirations and the collective goals of a national sporting body. While Soh Wooi Yik’s bio update may have been a simple professional declaration, it served as a timely reminder of the broader conversations happening within Malaysian badminton.
