Teen Sensation Eyes Socceroos Call-Up

Teen Sensation Lucas Herrington Makes Waves in Socceroos’ Defence

A prodigious young talent is rapidly emerging as a potential bolter for the Socceroos’ World Cup squad, with 18-year-old defender Lucas Herrington earning significant praise from national coach Tony Popovic. Herrington demonstrated remarkable composure and maturity during his assured debut in the Australian setup, a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Cameroon in Sydney.

His inclusion as the youngest Australian starting defender in 45 years, slotting in as a left-sided centre-back within Popovic’s back three, speaks volumes about the faith placed in his abilities.

Popovic’s Bold Call: A Testament to Training Prowess

Coach Tony Popovic admitted that he had initially planned to hold the young defender back for the subsequent friendly against Curacao in Melbourne. However, Herrington’s standout performances during training sessions left an indelible impression, prompting Popovic to fast-track his international debut.

“He looked really comfortable in the environment and I thought of giving him minutes in the second game but after I saw him train on Wednesday I was convinced he could start,” Popovic stated. He elaborated on his decision-making process, noting, “When I saw him train, I thought, ‘yes, he’s 18, so you can find an excuse not to play him if you want. But I thought to let him go out there.’”

Popovic highlighted the importance of pairing Herrington with experienced players, mentioning the 22-year-old Alex Circati by his side. He expressed optimism that this pairing could be a glimpse into the future of the national team’s defence. The coach was particularly impressed by Herrington’s ability to seamlessly integrate into the squad, drawing a contrast with other young players who might overthink their actions at this level.

“We had quite a hard session on Wednesday and he looked like he had been around for a couple of camps. Some boys you can see they’re over-thinking every moment, ‘I made a mistake, I’m with the national team, it’s not good’, but this kid just gets on with it,” Popovic observed, underscoring Herrington’s unflappable demeanour.

A Meteoric Rise Fueled by Club Success

Herrington’s trajectory has been nothing short of spectacular. Just three months ago, he would likely have been much further down the defensive pecking order. However, his successful transfer from Brisbane Roar to the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer (MLS) has dramatically opened the door for him to stake a claim for a World Cup call-up.

Tony Popovic has consistently shown a willingness to make courageous selection decisions throughout his tenure. If Herrington continues to be a regular starter for the Colorado Rapids in the MLS, he will undoubtedly remain a strong contender for a World Cup berth.

The Fierce Competition for a World Cup Spot

The path to the Socceroos’ World Cup squad is a competitive one, and Herrington faces stiff competition from a talented pool of defenders. His potential rivals for a place in the team include:

  • Alex Circati: A young centre-back who has also impressed at the domestic level.
  • Cameron Burgess: A solid and experienced defender who has featured regularly for the Socceroos.
  • Jason Geria: Another defender with international experience who will be vying for selection.
  • Milos Degenek: A seasoned campaigner with a wealth of international experience, a known quantity for the national team.
  • Harry Souttar: If the towering defender can return to full fitness at Leicester City, he will undoubtedly be a strong contender, adding significant aerial presence and defensive nous to the squad.

Herrington’s Perspective: Embracing the Journey

The young defender himself acknowledged the rapid pace of his ascent. “It has happened quickly and I think I’ve just sort of tried to take everything in my stride,” Herrington commented. He reflected on his recent past, stating, “It wasn’t so long ago that I made my debut for the Roar, and everything has risen quickly since then but I’ve enjoyed the journey.”

Herrington’s focus on performing at his best for his club has clearly paid dividends. He also noted the impact of coaching decisions at the club level, saying, “I’ve obviously wanted to put my best foot forward at club level, the coach has shown he’s going to put faith in young players and that was in the back of my mind.” This confidence from his club coach has evidently translated into a belief in his own capabilities on the international stage. His composure and talent suggest he is more than ready to embrace the challenges ahead, potentially making him a surprise package for the upcoming World Cup.
