Beatrice’s Husband Edo: The Truth About His Fortune

Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi: Royal Connection and Real Estate Ambitions

Princess Beatrice’s husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, is a familiar figure in the property world. Known affectionately as Edo, he possesses a keen eye for interior design and an almost palpable aura of high-end refinement, underscored by an exceptional attention to detail. Were Edo himself a property, he might be described as meticulously maintained.

However, when he first stepped into the royal spotlight alongside Beatrice, some royal followers harboured a degree of suspicion. Could this charming Italian aristocrat, a scion of an aristocratic Italian family, truly be as perfect as he seemed? His departure from his former fiancée, the glamorous architect Dara Huang, with whom he shares a young son, to marry Beatrice, raised eyebrows. Ms. Huang’s mother, Lily, publicly expressed her shock, stating she believed her daughter was equally stunned by the abruptness of the split.

Further adding to the intrigue was Edoardo’s effusive Instagram declaration of love in 2019, proclaiming to Beatrice, “You will never be alone my love, my heart is your home. Hand in hand, today, tomorrow and forever.”

More than six years on, despite outward appearances of happiness and the couple’s own denials, whispers suggest they might be navigating a rocky patch.

Business Ventures and Royal Scrutiny

Princess Beatrice, 37, has been under considerable pressure to address her connections to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, a scandal that has cast a long shadow over her family. Alongside her sister Eugenie, she faces scrutiny following the arrest of their father, Prince Andrew, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

It is against this backdrop that Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, 42, recently faced criticism for his presence in Florida while Beatrice was perceived to be in need of his support. Edoardo maintains he was in the United States solely to “build my business.”

Pictures emerged of him in Miami, sporting a pastel pink suit and loafers, actively promoting his design company, Banda. He attended a conference and, judging by his extensive social media posts, appeared to be enjoying the sunshine. Images captured him relaxing outside the Art Deco Colony Hotel in Palm Beach and holding a glass of rosé on the rooftop of the Mr C Miami hotel.

Sources close to the couple have reportedly indicated a growing “distance” between them, with Beatrice allegedly “desperate to hold things together,” while her husband’s primary focus appears to be his business empire.

Within their social circle, some observers suggest that Edoardo would do well to acknowledge the significant boost his career received from his marriage to Prince Andrew’s eldest daughter. When they married in July 2020, he was accompanied by one of Europe’s most sought-after women.

“When they first got together, Edo wasn’t nearly so successful,” a former associate commented. “Being adjacent to royalty was transformative.”

While their union coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted most property businesses, the Daily Mail has uncovered that Banda encountered difficulties even prior to that period. In 2018, both of its main subsidiaries, Banda Design and Banda Property, reported losses.

Before this, the company Edoardo founded at the age of 23 had achieved moderate success, generating annual profits in the tens of thousands. However, his new life as a member of the Royal Family coincided with a period of remarkable expansion.

In 2020, Banda was a niche operation focused on identifying and developing high-end homes for affluent clients, predominantly in and around London. Today, it grandiosely describes itself as a “multi-disciplinary property practice, covering property search and acquisition, development, project management, architecture and interior design all over the world,” employing around 60 staff – more than triple the number from six years ago.

Recent filings with Companies House reveal that Banda Design Ltd, its interior design arm, reported a turnover of £2.2 million in 2024, with retained profits of £774,353. This stands in stark contrast to the year before Edoardo and Beatrice wed, when the company was £244,000 in the red.

Friends attest to Edoardo’s singular drive and his business acumen, attributing his success to dedication and talent. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that his name, or more accurately, his royal connections, provided him with unparalleled access to platforms for promoting his work.

Early Career and Royal Exposure

When Beatrice fell for him, Edoardo and his business ventures were relatively unknown. He once famously boasted to a newspaper about turning a substantial profit from converting a disused nightclub into flats, remarking that the £200,000 he invested was “peanuts.” Friends described this as characteristic of his “cocky” demeanour.

Post-wedding, his projects seemed to garner extensive media coverage. He was given free rein to discuss his commercial endeavours, often employing what appeared to be jargon-laden language, reminiscent of the style adopted by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

In a previous interview, he described an apartment block he worked on in Dubai as “sculptured, serene and fluid,” aiming to create an “emotionally resonant… sanctuary in the sky” inspired by the “softness of the desert landscape and the movement of air and light across it.”

While Edoardo never explicitly mentions his wife or the Royal Family in interviews, nor addresses questions about them, it’s understood that the press would readily fill in these details, thereby avoiding the appearance of him directly leveraging his royal status.

“It was the kind of publicity money can’t buy,” a source commented. “There were references in the likes of Vogue and Hello! to him joining the Royal Family. It didn’t exactly do his business any harm, did it? Would he have got it if he wasn’t her [Beatrice’s] husband? Of course not.”

Just three months after his wedding, the Financial Times, a publication not known for frivolous coverage, interviewed him as the “property developer and newlywed husband of Princess Beatrice,” inquiring about his preferred scent (Santal 33 by Le Labo, priced at £184 a bottle) and his fridge staples (£68 London-smoked salmon and a bottle of tequila).

Luxury Developments and Lifestyle Promotion

Soon after, Tatler invited him to share “the design secrets behind his latest property in Chelsea.” The society magazine hailed it as “one of the most important achievements of his design career, an incomparably luxurious and sensitively drawn together family home.”

Edoardo responded in kind: “It has such a wonderful energy and buzz – one can only imagine the ultimate playdate for children in the swimming pool followed by everyone piling onto the oversized, bespoke linen sofa in the cinema room to watch a film.”

Another project, a £130 million “uber-luxe ocean club development” on Australia’s Gold Coast, was promoted in 2023 with the tagline “which has a royal connection.” The head of the PR company managing the venture described it as a collaboration “between world-leading interior design studio Banda – founded by Edo Mapelli Mozzi, husband of Princess Beatrice – and highly credentialed Australian businessman Rory O’Brien.”

A property magazine noted that Edoardo would “bring a touch of royalty” to the Masthead scheme, which comprises 28 luxury apartments.

A television report on 9News Gold Coast was replete with royal references, including his marriage to Beatrice, and claimed that Edoardo, in addition to designing the interiors, was also a “potential buyer.” Edoardo himself was filmed stating: “I truly believe the team has put together the best residential scheme in all of Australia. This is going to be beachside living at its best.”

To his mother-in-law, Sarah Ferguson, whose name has been leveraged for numerous commercial ventures over the years, such promotional tactics would likely seem quite tame, if not entirely standard practice.

Family Ties and Developing Relationships

Princess Beatrice first introduced her new boyfriend to her parents in late 2018, although the two families had known each other for years.

His father is former Olympic Alpine skier Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, who represented Great Britain in the 1972 Winter Olympics in Japan. However, the Count and Edoardo’s mother divorced when Edoardo and his sister, Natalia, were very young, and his father subsequently relocated to France.

Edoardo’s mother, Nikki, remarried, and he developed a close relationship with his businessman stepfather, Christopher Shale, who was a constituency chairman and close personal friend of former Prime Minister David Cameron in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Shale passed away at the age of 56 in 2011, and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, along with their daughters, were among the attendees at his memorial service.

The connection between the Shale family and the York family dates back many years. Before Sarah Ferguson became the Duchess of York, Shale employed her as a secretary at a public relations company. Given the intertwined nature of the two families, Beatrice and Edoardo maintained a low-profile relationship until they felt confident enough to publicly announce their coupling.

Public Displays and Private Strain

Each year, Edoardo posts affectionate social media tributes to his wife on her birthday and their wedding anniversary. However, an insider claims, “Things haven’t been great for a while between them, but Beatrice has been determined to soldier on and forge a path through. She really wants to almost naively see the good in people and will turn a blind eye to uncomfortable truths – that is why she was blind to her father’s behaviour, and the same is true of her belief in Edo. She wants to stay together, but he seems more and more distracted by work and travel. Just when she needs him most, he’s been pulling away.”

Despite these claims, Beatrice was seen leaving a sophisticated sushi bar with Edoardo in Notting Hill, West London, following a friend’s birthday lunch, appearing all smiles. The following day, they were spotted a mile away, exiting a taxi and heading towards Kensington Palace, presumably to visit Princess Eugenie at Ivy Cottage, her London residence.

“The sisters have had much to discuss in recent months and have been holding crisis talks,” a source revealed. “And that looks likely to be the case for quite a while yet.”

This ongoing family situation, some might argue, could present a troubling image for someone whose business is centred on creating “serene” perfection for the ultra-wealthy.
