Cameron Young and Jason Day Challenge McIlroy in Masters Third Round

A Dramatic Shift in the 2026 Masters

A period of intense action over the course of 30 minutes has dramatically altered the landscape of the 2026 Masters, as defending champion Rory McIlroy found himself losing his commanding lead during the third round. McIlroy entered Saturday’s play with a record six-stroke advantage at Augusta, but this lead was quickly eroded, reducing to just two strokes by the time he completed the front nine.

The situation took a dramatic turn when American golfer Cameron Young tied McIlroy with a crucial birdie on the 16th hole, while McIlroy bogeyed the par-three 12th, slipping out of the top spot. Young finished the round with an impressive 65, which is the best score of the tournament so far, and held a one-stroke lead after signing his card. McIlroy managed to tie Young at 11-under with strong birdies on holes 14 and 15, but a bogey on the 17th saw him finish the third round at 1-over 73, sharing the lead with Young at 11-under.

McIlroy acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, “The quality of the chasing pack is obvious. There’s a lot of guys in with a chance tomorrow.” He added, “I’m still tied for the best score going into tomorrow, so I can’t forget that, but I do know I’m going to have to be better if I want to have a chance to win.”

A Remarkable Comeback from Young

Young’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, especially considering he started the day eight strokes behind the leader. If Young were to win, he would become the first Masters winner to do so after trailing by more than five shots at the halfway mark of the tournament.

He was paired with Australian Jason Day, who had a strong run with four consecutive birdies from holes 12 to 15, applying pressure before hitting a bunker and giving back a shot on the 16th. Day’s round of 68 kept him in the mix at 8-under, tied for fifth and three strokes back heading into the final day.

Day reflected on the pressure, saying, “I feel like the guys that are leading right now have all the pressure. I’m the chaser. Usually the chasers don’t really have a lot of the pressure. Guys at the top of the leaderboard always are trying to defend the lead, whereas I’m pushing forward trying to cut into the lead.”

Key Moments and Turning Points

Young’s day was marked by several pivotal moments. His tee shot on the 13th flew wide left and bounced into a tree before landing in a favorable position on the fairway. “Oh, how nice is that now,” Day remarked. Young later found the water on the 15th, bogeying the hole and setting up a critical passage of play between himself and McIlroy. However, he recovered with another fortunate bounce off a tree on the 17th.

Meanwhile, McIlroy’s long game faltered, with a water hazard on the 11th leading to a double bogey after missing a six-foot putt. He also went way left on the 12th, bogeyed, and had to hack out of the pine needles on the 13th. Despite these challenges, he managed to save par after moving spectators and a generator out of the way.

Other Contenders in the Mix

While McIlroy and Young stole the spotlight, other players made their own marks. Shane Lowry delivered a highlight of the third round with an ace on the par-three 16th hole during a round of 68, placing him fourth at 9-under. World number one Scottie Scheffler also surged back into contention with an eagle at the second and five birdies in a bogey-free 65. Starting the day 12 shots behind McIlroy, Scheffler moved within five shots of the lead and remained confident in his chances.

Adam Scott, the 2013 Masters winner, is the only other Australian still in the tournament. After a first under-par round, he sits in a tie for 36th at 2-under heading into the final day.

Final Round Pairings

As the tournament heads into its final day, several key pairings will determine the outcome. Scott will start his final round alongside England’s Marco Penge at 12:45am AEST Monday. Day will be joined by last year’s playoff loser Justin Rose in the third last group from 4:03am. Lowry and third-placed Sam Burns will tee off at 4:14am, with McIlroy and Young starting at 4:25am.
