I made mistakes, but… Rizwan erupts over T20 retirement talk

A Challenging Phase for Mohammad Rizwan

Mohammad Rizwan, the former captain of Pakistan, is currently experiencing a difficult phase in his career as he faces a terrible run of form during the ongoing Pakistan Super League 2026 season. His team, Rawalpindi Pindiz, has suffered their seventh consecutive loss, which ultimately led to their elimination from the competition for the top four spots.

This poor performance by the team has been matched by Rizwan’s underwhelming batting display. In seven innings, he has managed only 107 runs without making any significant contributions. For a player known for his reliability and consistency in T20 cricket, this has been a disappointing season so far.

The final blow came on Saturday when the defending champions, Lahore Qalandars, defeated Rawalpindi Pindiz by 32 runs. Following the match, Rizwan was questioned about his potential retirement from T20 cricket.

Rizwan’s Response on Future in T20 Cricket

During the post-match press conference, Rizwan was directly asked if he was considering retiring from the T20 format after this series of poor performances. This question had been on his mind even before the tournament began. However, Rizwan did not hesitate to clearly state that he would not give up. Although he admitted his performances have not met expectations, he remains committed to working hard to improve.

Rizwan responded to questions about his retirement plans:

“When I was playing the Big Bash and the team was selected, I clearly stated that on this performance, I do not deserve a place in the Pakistan team. But I am the same person who was being told by you guys that he cannot hit a six.”

The 33-year-old was previously dropped from Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad after a challenging spell in the Big Bash League, and it seems his form has continued to decline in the T20 format.

Rizwan’s Determination to Keep Fighting

Despite the criticism, Rizwan emphasized that he still has confidence in himself. He pointed out that bad form is just a temporary phase and that he will continue to work hard to make a comeback.

Rizwan concluded:

“But I’ll tell you that we are human. I’ve said that my batting is not good, and that I’ve made some mistakes, but this does not mean that I should lose morale and sit before you idly.”

He also stressed that he has always been honest about his performance and is not afraid to step aside if he fails to meet the standards set by others.

The wicket-keeper said:

“If I have it in me, I’ll get chances, otherwise, as I have said in the past as well, I have asked the captain of Pakistan to replace me if necessary.”

At this moment, Rizwan is focusing on his game and aiming to prove his critics wrong. However, it’s worth noting that Pakistan’s World Cup campaign has already come to an end.
