West Coast Fever Triumphs Without Key Player
The West Coast Fever showcased their resilience and determination in a thrilling Super Netball match against the Melbourne Mavericks, securing a 59-47 victory at the John Cain Arena. This win marked their fourth consecutive success in the league, despite the absence of their star playmaker, Alice Teague-Neeld.
The Fever had never lost to the Mavericks in a regular-season game, and they maintained their perfect record on Sunday. The team started the game strongly, with an impressive opening quarter that set the tone for the rest of the match. Melbourne struggled with turnovers, which left their coach, Gerard Murphy, visibly frustrated. By the end of the first quarter, the Fever had built a commanding lead of 20-7.

After making strategic substitutions, including moving Jamaican international Shimona Nelson and goal attack Reilley Batcheldor to the bench, the Mavericks managed to stabilize their performance. By the middle of the fourth quarter, they had narrowed the gap to just five goals. However, the Fever remained composed and resilient, holding onto their advantage throughout the match.
The team’s success was largely driven by their star goal shooter, Romelda Aiken-George, who delivered an outstanding performance with 50 goals from 57 shots. Her consistency and precision were crucial in maintaining the Fever’s lead. The absence of Alice Teague-Neeld, who was ruled out due to back soreness, was felt, but the team adapted well without her.
Zoe Cransberg, who filled in as the central player, played a vital role in the team’s success. She contributed 34 feeds, 21 goal assists, and one gain, showcasing her leadership and skill on the court. Defender Fran Williams also made a significant impact, recording 11 gains and five interceptions, which helped the Fever remain competitive on the ladder.

For the Mavericks, Jamie-Lee Price was a standout performer, delivering 40 feeds, 18 goal assists, and two gains. Jessie Grenvold also had a strong showing, contributing five gains and three interceptions. Despite their efforts, the Mavericks were unable to close the gap sufficiently to challenge the Fever’s dominance.
The match began with both teams exchanging goals, but the Fever quickly capitalized on the Mavericks’ errors. They launched an 11-1 run in the first quarter, extending their lead to 13 points. The second quarter saw the Mavericks regroup, but they still trailed 33-21 at halftime.
Lee Price continued to perform well after halftime, and with Shimona Nelson returning to the court, the Mavericks found their rhythm. They managed to cut the deficit to within five points, but the Fever responded with a series of late goals to seal the victory.
This win highlights the depth and adaptability of the West Coast Fever, proving that they can overcome challenges and maintain their high level of performance even when key players are unavailable. The team’s ability to adjust and execute their strategy effectively was a key factor in their success.
