A Troubled Season for Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings have had a difficult time in the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team has faced multiple challenges, including injuries to key players and inconsistent performances. One of the latest setbacks came when young batter Ayush Mhatre sustained a hamstring tear during the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18th. At just 18 years old, Mhatre had been one of the few bright spots for the team this season, and his injury has added to the growing concerns for the franchise.
Mhatre’s injury is another blow for a team already struggling with a number of key players being ruled out due to injuries. MS Dhoni has not played a single game this season due to a calf strain, while Khaleel Ahmed was sidelined with a quadriceps tear. Overseas player Nathan Ellis also missed the tournament with a hamstring tear, and his replacement, Spencer Johnson, has been unavailable due to a stress fracture. With Mhatre now joining the list of injured players, the situation for the team looks even more challenging.
Injuries Continue to Plague the Team
The injury woes for Chennai Super Kings are far from over. The team has had to deal with several high-profile absences, which have impacted their performance on the field. The batting coach, Mike Hussey, confirmed the severity of Mhatre’s injury after the match. He stated that it appears to be a serious hamstring tear and mentioned that a scan would be conducted soon to determine the extent of the damage.
Hussey expressed his disappointment at losing Mhatre, who had been in good form. He said:
“Obviously a hamstring tear. I don’t know how bad it is. I’m sure we’ll scan him probably tomorrow or the next day. It looks pretty bad, unfortunately. And he’s going to be a big, big loss because he’s been in really nice touch for us.”
He added:
“So, as much as we’re really disappointed to lose Ayush – I don’t know how long for – it’s exciting for a new player to come in and get a chance.”
Hussey also noted that Mhatre’s injury could affect his batting. “He was hitting the ball beautifully, hitting boundaries at will. I guess it’s definitely going to have an effect definitely.”
Performance Struggles Add to Concerns
Chennai Super Kings have had an inconsistent campaign so far. They started the season with three straight losses against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, they managed to bounce back with wins against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite these wins, the team has only secured two victories in six matches, leaving them in seventh place on the table.
India’s spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, criticized how the injury was handled during the game. He pointed out that it could not have been a cramp since Mhatre had not been fielding at all. Ashwin questioned the hydration needs and the decision to let Mhatre continue playing despite showing signs of a severe limp.
“I just cannot fathom as to why he did not retire out when he was clearly limping? Out of all the players Ayush Mhatre has been one of the performers in this season and I don’t understand why they handled him with such carelessness. I was actually shocked to see that.”
Impact on the Team
Despite the injury, Mhatre has been a key player for CSK. He has scored 201 runs in six matches at a strike rate of around 178. His absence could significantly impact the team’s performance, with Urvil Patel likely to step in as his replacement.
With the ongoing injuries, dip in form, and the transition period, Chennai Super Kings face a tough challenge in turning their season around. The team will need to regroup quickly and find ways to strengthen their lineup to remain competitive in the tournament.
