Community Event Brings Together Plant Lovers and Garden Enthusiasts
Every year, garden enthusiasts in Jackson, Mississippi, eagerly await the Metro Master Gardeners’ Annual Plant Sale. This event is more than just a chance to find unique plants for their homes and yards—it also serves as a vital fundraiser for educational programs and local projects focused on horticulture.
The sale is not only a marketplace but also a community gathering where people can connect over shared interests in gardening. The day before the big event, the greenhouse at Mynelle Gardens is alive with activity as water trickles down leaves into containers that will soon be heading to new homes. Volunteers have been tending to these plants for months, ensuring they are in peak condition for the sale.
Pam Howorth, a five-year member of the Metro Master Gardeners, has a particular passion for roses. She will be on hand during the sale to offer advice and share her expertise. One of the most common questions this year is about which tree to plant. Howorth recommends vitex trees as an alternative to crepe myrtles, which are becoming increasingly susceptible to disease.
“The vitex tree is a beautiful substitute for the crepe myrtle,” said Howorth. “I have one that drops a lot of seeds, and we do have a lot of little vitex trees growing around here.”
Emily Dear, a 16-year member of the group, explained that the process begins in November when plants are brought to the Mynelle Gardens greenhouse. Clippings and seeds are placed into soil, where they are nurtured over several months. The average price of plants ranges from $4 to $15, with larger plants costing more.
Supporting Educational Programs and Local Projects
The proceeds from the annual plant sale go toward supporting educational demonstrations and maintaining four area locations. One of the key initiatives funded by the sale is a scholarship program at Mississippi State University. Each year, the Metro Master Gardeners award $2,000 to encourage young people to pursue careers in gardening and farming.
Another important project supported by the sale is the maintenance of Greenwood Cemetery. Every February, volunteers come together to trim the roses, keeping the cemetery’s gardens looking their best.
Last year’s plant sale was a huge success, raising over $10,000. This year’s event is expected to be just as impactful.
