Quiet Takeover: Manufacturers Push F1-Style Budget Cap to Halt Honda’s 2027 Rise

The Push for a Budget Cap in MotoGP

Several teams in MotoGP are advocating for the implementation of a budget cap in the top tier of the sport, driven by growing concerns over Honda’s financial strength. After years of decline, the Japanese manufacturer is making a strong push to reclaim its position at the forefront of the grid. This comes after Honda secured C-rank concessions last season, which have helped them regain momentum.

Although the RC213V is not yet a race-winner, there is clear potential in the project, largely due to Honda’s substantial financial backing. This has prompted some rival teams to consider implementing a system similar to Formula 1’s budget cap. The idea is to level the playing field and prevent any single team from gaining an unfair advantage due to their financial resources.

Honda is already in talks with Tech3 about joining LCR as a second satellite team. Their goal is to match Ducati by running six bikes on the grid by 2027. This move highlights just how robust Honda’s financial position has become, and it signals their intent to be a major player once again.

Honda’s Budget Cap Request Faces Unexpected Opposition

Despite Honda’s efforts to rebuild after a challenging period, they are expected to return to the top of the grid. This development is causing concern among other teams. Simon Patterson, a journalist from The Race MotoGP Podcast, commented on this issue, stating, “I honestly think that bike is close enough to be competitive, that the new regulation cycle is going to give them the boost that they need, and they’re Honda. They come to win races. Like that’s what they do.”

Patterson continued, “Winning races is what Honda have done since 1965, since the first Premier title. It’s what they’re going to continue to do. Every other manufacturer in MotoGP, apart from Yamaha, probably, they won’t say it out loud, but they want an F1 price cap, a budget cap just to slow down Honda.”

He added, “Ducati are selling 50,000 bikes a year, 50,000 Panigales a year to fund their MotoGP project, and Honda is selling 4 million in Indonesia. There is so much resource behind what they do, that for me, OK, it might not be ’27, but Honda are going to win again, without a doubt, Honda are going to win, and Honda don’t just win, they dominate.”

Honda’s Future Looks Bright with Fabio Quartararo and David Alonso

It has been a while since Honda last won the MotoGP title, with Marc Marquez being the last champion in 2019. Since then, the team has struggled to create a competitive package. However, changes coming in 2027 could change that dynamic.

If reports are accurate, Honda may finally have a bike that can compete next season. Their rider lineup also looks promising. Fabio Quartararo is joining from Yamaha, and Moto2 standout David Alonso is expected to be his teammate. Quartararo will become the highest-paid rider on the grid next year.

Frustrated by Yamaha’s slow progress on development, Quartararo made the move to Honda hoping for a more competitive bike. The pairing of Quartararo and Alonso is generating a lot of excitement for 2027. With Honda’s financial support behind them, there is hope they can push for wins and even challenge for the title. However, how quickly they adapt to the new bike remains an open question.
