Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder Dominate the Phoenix Suns
On Sunday, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder made a strong statement against the Phoenix Suns. In Game 1 of their first-round series, the Thunder secured a commanding 119-84 victory, showcasing why they are the defending champions. This win not only highlighted their dominance as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference but also emphasized the team’s collective strength.
The Thunder’s defense was instrumental in their success. They recorded 13 steals during the game, setting a physical tone that left the Suns struggling to find their rhythm. Additionally, the team forced the Suns into 17 turnovers, further disrupting their offensive flow.
On the offensive end, SGA led the charge with 25 points. Despite shooting only 27.8% from the field, he made the most of his opportunities at the free-throw line. SGA attempted 17 free throws and converted 15 of them, demonstrating his ability to capitalize on contact and draw fouls.

During his postgame presser, SGA was asked about his approach to drawing fouls and creating scoring opportunities at the free-throw line. He explained, “When you drive the ball a lot, you get fouled a lot just because most of the fouls happen on drives and I drive the ball a lot… that probably adds up to it.” He also mentioned his focus on improving various aspects of his game over the years, allowing him to attack defenses in multiple ways. “I feel like I’ve done so, I’ve been able to score a few points because of it,” he added.
SGA was the only player on the team to attempt more than five free throws, but the Thunder still outperformed the Suns in this category. Oklahoma City had 23 free-throw attempts compared to Phoenix’s 18. Devin Booker led the Suns with seven attempts.
SGA’s efficiency at the free-throw line played a crucial role in the Thunder’s early lead in the series. Even though he struggled to find his shooting rhythm, the team relied on the strong performances of Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams.
Holmgren contributed 16 points and seven rebounds, shooting 50.0% from the field. Williams, on the other hand, delivered a standout performance with 22 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, shooting 60.0%. The one-time MVP praised his teammates for stepping up and expected nothing less from them.
“They were good,” he said. “They just played to their identity and then stepped outside of it. Both of those guys, any given night, affect the game at a high level… There’s no secret sauce, secret formula, just two really good basketball players being themselves and helping the team win at a high level.”
The Thunder’s deep roster has consistently supported SGA, especially during his off nights. This depth allowed the team to maintain their dominance even when key players struggled to find their shooting touch.
As the series continues, the Thunder will look to build on their strong start and continue proving their championship pedigree. With a balanced attack and a resilient defense, they remain a formidable force in the playoffs.
