The Suns’ Struggles in Game 1 Highlight Key Challenges
OKLAHOMA CITY — In a game that saw the Phoenix Suns fall 119-84 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of their Western Conference playoff series, guard Jalen Green identified pace as a critical factor if the Suns hope to regain control of the series. The loss was marked by turnovers, inconsistent shooting, and defensive issues, which allowed the Thunder to dominate both offensively and defensively.
The Suns struggled to find their rhythm early in the game, and this lack of consistency carried through all four quarters. Green emphasized the need for the team to play faster and capitalize on open shots. He also highlighted the importance of rebounds and transitioning quickly after stops.
“Play a little bit faster, play a lot of good game,” Green said after the game. “Hit the open shots. Shoot the open shots. It’s going to come down to the rebound. Once we get our stops, we’ve got to turn those stops and move on into transition points. I think we’ll be right.”
The Thunder controlled much of the game’s tempo, using their defensive rebounds to create quick offensive opportunities and building a lead that the Suns never really threatened. While the Suns had moments with clean looks, they struggled to convert them, allowing Oklahoma City to maintain control of the game’s flow.
Oklahoma City outrebounded the Suns 54-45 and scored 34 points off 17 turnovers. These second-chance opportunities extended possessions and drained the Suns’ momentum, contributing to an 18-2 edge in second-chance points.
For a Suns team built around efficiency and half-court execution, the game served as a reminder of how quickly control can shift when rebounding and pace are in the opponent’s favor. The challenge now is not only adjusting strategies but also matching the energy and physicality that the Thunder established in Game 1.
“We will sit down, watch film, and figure that out and discuss it,” Green said. “But, I mean, for the simplest part, I said it already, just getting stops and playing fast in transition, I think that would help us a lot, too.”
What the Suns Need to Do
- Improve Pace: The Suns must play faster and capitalize on open shots. This includes moving the ball quickly and making sure they are in the right positions to take advantage of scoring opportunities.
- Focus on Rebounds: Getting more rebounds, especially on the defensive end, will be crucial. This will help limit the Thunder’s second-chance points and give the Suns more possessions.
- Defensive Adjustments: The Suns need to make adjustments on defense to better contain the Thunder’s offense. This may involve changing defensive schemes or focusing on specific players who have been effective against them.
Looking Ahead
Phoenix and Oklahoma City will face off again in Game 2 on Wednesday, April 22, at 6:30 p.m. The Suns will need to regroup quickly and make the necessary adjustments to avoid falling behind 0-2 in the series.
