A Unique Lifestyle Choice
An Australian office worker has recently sparked a conversation after sharing his unique approach to embracing what he calls ‘tradie culture,’ despite working a typical desk job. The 28-year-old shared his experiences in a Reddit post, where he described how he has started adopting behaviors associated with the trades industry.
It all began with small changes. He mentioned that he started enjoying early morning servo coffees and listening to the same radio shows as those in the trades. He also picked up some of the slang used by the people he knows. This led him to buy workwear because he found it comfortable, and now it’s mostly what he wears on weekends.
The trend escalated further, with him spending most Saturdays at Bunnings even when he didn’t need anything. He has also taken up random DIY projects and caught himself using terms like ‘knock off,’ ‘smoko,’ and ‘arvo’ in the office.
While some of his friends find this amusing, others have accused him of ‘cosplaying as a tradie.’ He is unsure if it comes off as forced or cringe. His post generated hundreds of comments on social media, with some confirming his fears while others defended him.

One user commented, “Yep, I’d say it’s gone a bit far if you’re wearing hi-vis for ‘comfort.’” Another quipped, “Mate, just grab an iced coffee, buy yourself a Hilux, and get yourself an apprenticeship. Problem solved.”
A self-proclaimed tradie with over a decade of experience criticized the user’s behavior. “As a tradie of 10 years, there’s nothing more cringe than a clean shirt cosplaying as a tradie.”
However, some people empathized with his situation. One commenter wrote, “I’m sitting in the office wearing a King Gee shirt right now. These shirts are so much more comfortable than regular work shirts. I get where you’re coming from.”
Another person added that functional gear has universal appeal, regardless of someone’s job. “I wear workwear shorts because, as a woman, they are the only shorts with pockets big enough for my phone,” they said.
This story highlights how personal style and lifestyle choices can sometimes blur the lines between different communities. It also raises questions about authenticity and the ways in which people express themselves through their clothing and behavior. Whether it’s seen as a genuine interest or just a phase, the discussion around this topic continues to grow.
