Emily Saliers on Voice Challenges and Health Conditions

Emily Saliers Shares Diagnosis of Two Incurable Conditions Affecting Her Vocal Performance

Emily Saliers, one-half of the iconic duo Indigo Girls, has revealed that she is facing two incurable medical conditions that will impact her vocal performance during the band’s upcoming tour. The news comes as the group prepares to embark on a U.S. tour this week, with their first show set for April 24 in Athens, Ohio.

In a post shared on the band’s Instagram account, Saliers disclosed that she has been living with these conditions for some time and emphasized that they are progressive, meaning they will worsen over time. She chose to be completely open about her experiences during a video recorded during tour rehearsals in Atlanta. In the clip, she explained her diagnoses: cervical dystonia and essential tremor.

Cervical dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that affects the muscles in the neck, causing the head to twist or tilt involuntarily. Saliers described how this condition causes her head to twist to the right and can lead to shaking. She noted that this structural issue impacts the throat area, which is critical for singing.

The second condition, essential tremor, is a nervous system disorder that causes involuntary shaking. Saliers explained that this affects multiple parts of her singing apparatus, including the larynx, pharyngeal muscles, jaw, and diaphragm. This means she struggles to maintain the muscular connections needed for clear, steady tones. Additionally, the tremor has introduced an unwanted vibrato that she never had before.

“Many of you have noticed that my voice – maybe all of you have noticed, it’s pretty noticeable – that my voice is not what it once was,” Saliers said in the video. “So I wanted to share with you that I’ve been diagnosed with two movement disorders.”

Saliers also mentioned that her treatment plan includes therapeutic massage, physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and Botox injections in her neck and shoulders. These treatments aim to manage symptoms, but she acknowledges there is no cure for these conditions. As a result, she admits that her voice will not be what it once was, which is a difficult reality for her.

Despite these challenges, Saliers remains committed to delivering the best possible performances. She is working with a vocal coach who specializes in helping singers with movement disorders. Additionally, the band is utilizing modern digital tools to enhance their sound during live shows.

Amy Ray, Saliers’ bandmate, has been a strong source of support throughout this process. Together, they are approaching this challenge with transparency and determination. Saliers reflected on the natural process of aging, noting that both she and Ray are experiencing the effects of time.

Her openness has resonated with fans and industry peers alike. Chely Wright, a fellow artist, praised Saliers for her authenticity, courage, and grace. Lifelong fan Brandi Carlile shared the video on her Instagram account, expressing deep admiration for the duo and their music.

Carlile wrote, “This is why these two have been my heroes and the only reason I ever picked up a guitar. Being an @indigogirls fan is a life-long privilege. Indigo Girls fans already have an evolved perspective on aging and a deeper understanding of how badass vulnerability really is.”

As the Indigo Girls prepare for their tour, fans are eager to support them and continue celebrating their music. With their history of chart-topping albums and Grammy awards, the duo has built a loyal following that values their artistry and resilience.

Upcoming Tour Dates and Fan Support

The Indigo Girls’ U.S. tour will run through mid-December, with dates scheduled across various cities. Fans can look forward to experiencing the duo’s music in a live setting, even as Saliers navigates her health challenges.

Their legacy, marked by hits like Swamp Ophelia and Shaming of the Sun, continues to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners. The band’s commitment to transparency and authenticity has strengthened their connection with fans, who remain steadfast in their support.

As Saliers and Ray prepare for their performances, they are focused on making the most of every moment. Their journey serves as a reminder of the power of music and the strength of the human spirit. With the backing of their community, the Indigo Girls are ready to take the stage and share their voices once again.
