FC Porto Academy Zimbabwe Triumphs at Under-13 Next Generation Tournament in Harare

A Celebration of Youth, Sport, and National Unity

The FC Porto Academy Zimbabwe recently made history by hosting the inaugural Under-13 Next Generation Cup. This vibrant event took place on a day that marked the nation’s 46th Independence Day, creating a unique blend of national pride and youthful energy. The tournament brought together 16 teams from across Zimbabwe, showcasing not only their footballing skills but also the spirit of unity and community.

The competition was more than just a sporting event; it was a platform for talent identification and a proactive measure to guide young people away from the dangers of drug and substance abuse through the transformative power of sport. The initiative aimed to create a positive impact on the youth, encouraging them to channel their energy into constructive activities.

Diverse Participation and Strong Representation

While most of the participating teams came from the capital city, the tournament successfully attracted teams from various regions, including Bulawayo, Nkayi, Bindura, and Norton. This wide representation underscored the national significance of the event. The lineup featured several prominent developmental sides such as the hosts FC Porto Academy, Nkayi Soccer Academy, Total Football Academy, Sporting Braga Lions, and Scottland Academy.

Other notable participants included BHS Academy, Rock Academy, Bundu Rollers Football Club, Harare Town City Boys, Multi-Talent Soccer Academy, Auckland Academy, Big Staff Soccer Academy, Better 11 Soccer Academy, and Bright Stars Soccer Academy. Each team brought its own unique flair and enthusiasm, contributing to the overall success of the tournament.

Leadership and Professional Interest

The event was overseen by the leadership of FC Porto Academy Zimbabwe, with general manager Tichaona Moleni emphasizing the academy’s commitment to international standards of youth development. His words reflected the high level of dedication and professionalism that characterized the tournament.

The tournament also attracted attention from the professional football fraternity. TelOne FC head coach Herbert Maruwa made a brief appearance to witness the grassroots talent. His Gweru-based top-flight side is currently in Harare to face CAPS United at Rufaro Stadium today, highlighting the connection between local and national football.

Tournament Director’s Perspective

Tournament director Trymore Charuma expressed immense satisfaction with the tournament’s impact and the quality of play on display. He noted the significant turnout of teams from various parts of Zimbabwe, including Bulawayo and Bindura. Charuma highlighted the importance of the timing, stating that the tournament served as a tribute to the nation’s history.

“We really appreciate 4May, which is our main sponsor for FC Porto Academy, and we also want to appreciate Chicken House who have made our event so successful. We wanted to celebrate this special day by giving these youngsters something to remember—that on independence day, we actually played our tournament in a way of celebrating our national unity,” he said.

Charuma confirmed that the Next Generation Tournament is set to become an annual fixture on the youth football calendar, with plans to expand the format in future editions. This indicates a long-term commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering a culture of sportsmanship.

Notable Attendees and Their Support

Among the notable attendees was Dynamos secretary general Devine Sena, who attended both as a high-ranking football official and a supportive parent. Sena, who also donated footballs to the initiative, lauded the organizers for providing a healthy alternative for the youth.

“You see a lot of kids are here, they are occupied. They are spending more time out of the streets, doing what they love the most. By the time they get home, they are all tired and resting. So this is quite important in terms of driving the anti-drug campaign,” Sena remarked.

Sena was impressed by the logistical execution of the event, adding, “The tournament is top-notch in terms of organisation, and you can see even by the attendance. I want to commend the organisers for such a brilliant event.”

A Promising Future for Youth Football

The success of the inaugural Under-13 Next Generation Cup marks a significant milestone in the development of youth football in Zimbabwe. With the support of sponsors, the involvement of professional football figures, and the participation of diverse teams, the event has set a strong foundation for future editions. The tournament not only celebrates the nation’s history but also invests in the future of its youth, ensuring that they have a positive and constructive path to follow.

As the Next Generation Tournament continues to grow, it promises to be a vital component of Zimbabwe’s football landscape, fostering talent, unity, and a lasting legacy for generations to come.
