REA brings sustainable energy to 17.5 million homes — Aliyu

A Vision for Sustainable Power

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has made significant strides in bringing sustainable power to millions of homes across Nigeria. The Managing Director of the agency, Dr. Abba Aliyu, recently shared that the REA has successfully extended electricity to over 17.5 million households nationwide. This achievement marks a major milestone in the country’s journey toward energy independence and economic development.

This progress is being fueled by a recent N100 billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which is currently seeing active funding disbursements. These funds are aimed at accelerating the development of critical mini-grid projects, which are essential for reaching remote and underserved communities.

Dr. Aliyu was honored with the Award of Excellence for transparency and efficiency in the execution of renewable energy projects by the Editorial Board of Energy Times. This recognition highlights his leadership and the impactful work being done by the REA under the current administration.

A Testament to Leadership and Innovation

Aliyu emphasized that the award reflects the transformative efforts led by President Bola Tinubu and the strategic direction provided by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu. He stated that the award serves as a validation of the Renewed Hope agenda in the power sector. It underscores the REA’s role in powering millions of homes and leading Nigeria’s transition to a more resilient, solar-powered economy.

Yakubu Lawal, Chairman of the Board of Editorial at Energy Times, explained the rationale behind the award. He noted that the board sought individuals whose work continues to transform the energy landscape and improve lives across the country. Lawal highlighted Dr. Aliyu’s ability to achieve an 85% budget execution rate while managing multi-million-dollar international facilities. This achievement demonstrates that transparency and efficiency can indeed coexist in Nigeria’s public sector.

Shaping a Decentralized Energy Future

Lawal further added that the recognition is not just a ceremonial gesture but an acknowledgment of Aliyu’s pivotal role in pivoting Nigeria toward a decentralized energy future. According to the editorial board, Aliyu’s leadership has been instrumental in positioning the country to provide electricity to 17.5 million Nigerians.

The primary catalyst for this award, according to the board, was Aliyu’s successful negotiation and implementation of the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) project. Funded by a $750 million World Bank facility, this project stands as the largest renewable energy initiative of its kind globally.

Key Initiatives and Collaborations

By engaging 21 states in roundtable meetings and providing them with data-driven electrification maps, Aliyu has decentralized the planning process. This approach allows states to take ownership of their specific energy needs, ensuring more tailored and effective solutions.

Additionally, Aliyu has championed the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model, empowering local firms to become utility-scale providers. His tenure has also seen a significant increase in local manufacturing, with Nigeria now beginning to export solar panels to Ghana.

A New Era for Renewable Energy

Under Dr. Aliyu’s leadership, the REA has not only expanded access to electricity but has also fostered a culture of innovation and sustainability. His efforts have laid the foundation for a more inclusive and resilient energy sector in Nigeria. As the country continues to embrace renewable energy, the impact of these initiatives will be felt for generations to come.

Through strategic partnerships, efficient resource management, and a commitment to transparency, the REA is setting a new standard for energy development in Africa. With continued support and investment, the vision of a fully electrified Nigeria is becoming increasingly attainable.
