Rwanda Secures First Win at ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy

Rwanda Secures Victory Over Vanuatu in Cricket Match

Rwanda showcased a strong comeback after their initial loss to Italy, securing a commanding 41-run victory over Vanuatu on Sunday at the Gahanga Cricket Stadium Main Oval. The match was played under clear skies, allowing the hosts to capitalize on their home advantage and achieve their first win of the tournament. Unlike their previous encounter, which was affected by rain and decided using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, this game provided ideal conditions for both teams.

Rwanda chose to bat first after winning the toss and managed to post a total of 109 runs in their 20 overs. The team’s performance was consistent throughout the innings, with key contributions from various players. Vanuatu, in response, faced difficulties and were eventually bowled out for just 68 runs, falling well short of the target. This defeat highlighted the challenges that Vanuatu encountered against a determined Rwandan side.

Captain Marie Diane Bimenyimana played a pivotal role in the victory, delivering an impressive all-round performance. She scored 28 runs and took 3 wickets for 18 runs in her four overs, earning her the Player of the Match award. Her leadership and skill were instrumental in guiding Rwanda to a decisive win.

Nepal Triumphs Over Italy in Another Exciting Match

Nepal also celebrated their first win of the ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy, defeating Italy by 50 runs at the same venue. The team showed resilience after their opening loss to the United States, delivering a dominant performance against an Italian side that struggled with the bat.

Nepal elected to bat first and posted a total of 112/8 in their 20 overs. Puja Mahato was the standout performer, scoring an unbeaten 48 off 45 balls, including two fours and a six. Samjhana Khadka contributed 16 runs, providing crucial support to the team’s batting effort.

Italy’s chase began poorly, as they failed to gain momentum against Nepal’s disciplined bowling. Alexia Kontopirakis, who had been a key player in Italy’s previous match against Rwanda, was dismissed for just six runs. The Italian team never recovered from the early setbacks, and Nepal’s bowling attack kept them under constant pressure throughout the innings.

Italy finished their innings on 62/9 in 18.4 overs, handing Nepal a comfortable victory. This win marked a significant turnaround for Nepal, showcasing their ability to bounce back from initial losses and perform consistently in high-stakes matches.

Upcoming Fixtures and Rest Day

After the recent matches, both teams will have a rest day on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday, April 21. The schedule for the day includes the following fixtures:

  • 1:00 PM: Vanuatu vs Italy (Gahanga Main Oval)

These matches are expected to be highly anticipated, as teams look to build on their performances and secure further victories in the tournament.
