Anesu Daka, a chartered accountant and educational leader, has carved a remarkable path from his humble beginnings in a mining town to becoming a pivotal figure in professional education. His journey is marked by perseverance, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to empowering others.
Daka’s story begins in Shurugwi, where he was born into a family that faced significant challenges. As the firstborn, he took on responsibilities early in life, helping to support his family through various small ventures. From picking mushrooms in the morning to selling games at the market, he learned the value of hard work and resourcefulness. These experiences instilled in him a spirit of innovation that would shape his future.
His father, a plumber who was retrenched, could not fully provide for the family. This led Daka to take on more responsibilities, contributing to the household by buying supplies and even teaching others to raise money for school fees. These early lessons in responsibility and self-reliance laid the foundation for his later achievements.
Daka’s academic journey began with a strong desire to learn. By Grade Seven, he was excelling so much that the headmaster arranged for him to attend a school far from home. There, he finished the small library by Form One and became close with his teachers. When they were away, he often led the class, showcasing his leadership skills and intellectual curiosity.
A key moment in his life came in 1996 when his elder brother passed away. This event shifted his role within the family, making him the eldest son. The sense of responsibility and focus it brought helped shape his determination to succeed.
Education as a Divine Vocation
Daka’s dedication to education led him to Fort Hare University, where he excelled and eventually earned a presidential scholarship. He also worked as a security guard, using this opportunity to save money for his studies. During this time, he continued to teach others, further reinforcing his belief in the transformative power of education.
After graduating, Daka joined Ernst & Young, where he began to make an impact. His unique approach to problem-solving and his commitment to excellence set him apart. He later founded Docere Holdings and the Chartered Accountants Academy (CAA), driven by a mission to address critical gaps in professional training.
Daka attributes his success in improving national pass rates to a philosophy of dedicated mentorship and treating education as a divine vocation. He believes that every life has a purpose, and his own journey reflects this conviction.
Contributions to Society
Throughout his career, Daka has served in various capacities, including as a presidential commissioner of Inquiry into the conversion of pension and insurance funds from Zimbabwe dollars to US dollars. He also serves on the Public Accounts and Auditors Board, demonstrating his commitment to financial integrity and accountability.
His work in the financial services space led to significant research and presentations, which eventually resulted in his involvement in the presidential commission. Daka’s ability to identify and address systemic issues has had a lasting impact on the financial landscape in Zimbabwe.
