Ethiopia’s Tourism Sector Gains Momentum as a Driver of Sustainable Development
Addis Ababa, April 19, 2026 — The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, has highlighted the growing significance of tourism in shaping the country’s development trajectory. He emphasized that the sector is becoming a crucial force in driving a more sustainable and diversified economy. This shift underscores a broader strategy to move away from traditional economic models and embrace a future where tourism plays a central role.
The Prime Minister noted that the tourism industry is gaining momentum as a key pillar of the economy. This growth is supported by several factors, including sustained investment in infrastructure, the restoration of heritage sites, and increased global promotion of Ethiopia as a premier travel destination. These efforts are aimed at positioning the country as a must-visit location for both domestic and international travelers.
In a recent message shared through social media channels, the Prime Minister announced the inauguration of the Haro Dandi Lodge, located in the Oromia Regional State. This project is a flagship initiative under the Dine for Generation program, which aims to create sustainable tourism opportunities while preserving Ethiopia’s natural and cultural heritage.
“Today, we officially inaugurated Haro Dandi Lodge in the Oromia Region, a key milestone of the Dine for Generation initiative,” the Prime Minister stated. He described the lodge as more than just an ecotourism destination, highlighting its role in presenting a new face of Ethiopia. According to him, the lodge showcases modern architecture that harmonizes with nature, reflecting a development approach rooted in sustainability and innovation.
The lodge serves as a symbol of Ethiopia’s commitment to responsible development. “This lodge is a testament to promises made and promises delivered. It elevates Ethiopia as a destination worthy of being visited, invested in, and cherished,” the Prime Minister said. He added that tourism is not merely a sector but a vital force shaping the nation’s future growth.
According to the Prime Minister, the site represents more than a tourism destination. It combines environmental protection with a broader national vision. “We didn’t just build, we chose to honour our natural legacy, magnifying the existing beauty of Dendi Crater Lake for generations to follow while respecting the heritage of the local people,” he noted. The lodge is described as a human-centered sanctuary built to respect the land and empower the community.
PM Abiy further emphasized that the project reflects a broader commitment beyond physical infrastructure. He highlighted its strong environmental focus and the natural beauty of Dendi Crater Lake, which is preserved through eco-conscious design that respects the surrounding ecosystem.
The initiative also prioritizes community-centered development. Local residents benefit from the project, and their cultural values and social well-being are safeguarded. “Haro Dandi Lodge is further proof that we have fulfilled our promise,” the Prime Minister added.
He noted that the project strengthens Ethiopia’s position as an attractive destination for international tourism and investment. It reinforces the country’s commitment to sustainable development and highlights the potential of tourism as a catalyst for economic growth.
The Prime Minister concluded by stating that tourism will continue to shape the country’s development trajectory. He emphasized that the sector will strengthen its role as a cornerstone of the national economy, contributing to long-term stability and prosperity.
