Contract Discussions and Focus on Coaching
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has confirmed that financial discussions are currently taking place regarding his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation. However, he emphasized that his primary focus remains on his coaching duties and upcoming assignments.
Chelle, whose current contract is set to expire in January 2027, mentioned that negotiations over his future are being managed by his representative. He is currently concentrating on team preparation and player assessment following Nigeria’s impressive performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the team secured a third-place finish.
During an interview with Nigerian journalist Osasu, Chelle acknowledged that financial matters are part of the ongoing talks. However, he stressed that he is prioritizing his responsibilities with the national team.
“Yes, there are financial issues to be discussed and resolved. But I leave them to my agent to handle with the federation,” Chelle reportedly said on X. “I want to concentrate on the job and the task at hand.”
Chelle’s comments come amid growing interest in his future following Nigeria’s recent success. Although other teams have reportedly shown interest, he remains committed to his current role and ongoing preparations.
The Franco-Malian coach is expected to be actively involved in scouting domestic talent as he builds his squad for the 2026 Unity Cup in London, where Nigeria will defend the title they won in 2025.
“I am coming to Nigeria to watch some NPFL games and see some players, and we have the Unity Cup in London to prepare for,” Chelle added.
Talent Identification and Squad Building
Chelle has already outlined plans to closely monitor players in the Nigeria Premier Football League. Additionally, he will evaluate uncapped players of Nigerian descent abroad as part of a broader talent identification process ahead of future international fixtures.
Nigeria will begin their Unity Cup campaign against Zimbabwe at The Valley on Tuesday, May 26. Depending on the results, they may face either Jamaica or India in the next round.
The tournament is considered an essential part of Chelle’s wider rebuilding strategy. It offers valuable opportunities to assess the squad and build momentum for upcoming challenges.
In addition to the Unity Cup, Nigeria has scheduled additional international friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June. These matches provide further chances to test the team at a higher competitive level.
Upcoming Fixtures and Strategic Planning
With the Unity Cup and friendly matches on the horizon, Chelle is focused on ensuring that the Super Eagles are well-prepared for the challenges ahead. His approach emphasizes both short-term goals and long-term development.
The coach’s strategy involves not only identifying and nurturing local talent but also exploring opportunities to bring in players of Nigerian descent who may contribute to the national team’s success.
By focusing on these key areas, Chelle aims to strengthen the team’s performance and maintain its position as a competitive force in international football.
