Manchester United are on the verge of securing a return to the Champions League after a crucial victory over Brentford on April 27. The Red Devils’ win placed them in third place with 61 points, putting them in a strong position to claim one of the five English teams that will qualify for the competition next season.

The match against Brentford was decisive, with first-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko proving enough to secure the three points. Mathias Jensen’s late goal for Brentford served only as a consolation. With this win, Manchester United now sit three points ahead of both Liverpool and Aston Villa, with four games remaining in the season.
The Premier League is set to send at least five teams to the Champions League next year, which puts Manchester United in a favorable position to secure a spot. However, they still have work to do before they can fully celebrate their progress.
Arsenal and Manchester City have already secured their places in the competition, leaving the rest of the teams to battle for the remaining slots. At this stage, the focus is on United, Liverpool, and Aston Villa, who are all vying for the final qualifying positions.
How Many Points Do Manchester United Need?
With 61 points, Manchester United are currently 11 points ahead of Brighton and Hove Albion in sixth place and 12 points ahead of Bournemouth in seventh. This means that only the two teams outside the top five could potentially overtake them if the right combination of results occurs.
If Brighton were to win all of their remaining games while Manchester United lost all of theirs, they could surpass United by just one point. Similarly, Bournemouth could tie United if such a scenario played out.
To avoid any potential slip-up, Manchester United need to gain at least two more points in their remaining fixtures. This can be achieved by winning one game or drawing two of their upcoming matches, which would give them an unassailable lead over the teams below them.
Manager’s Comments on Qualification
Manager Michael Carrick expressed his confidence in the team’s position after the victory over Brentford. “Qualifying for the Champions League is important, of course it is. At one stage, it looked in the distance, if I’m honest, but now it looks like we’re in a really good position. Credit to the boys for that, but it’s certainly not what we’re settling for,” he said, according to Manchester United’s official website.
Remaining Fixtures
Looking ahead, Manchester United’s schedule includes a key match against Liverpool on Sunday. A win in that game would allow them to complete a double over their rivals for the first time since the 2015/16 season, which would significantly strengthen their position in the race for the Champions League.
Other upcoming fixtures include an away trip to Sunderland, followed by a home game against Nottingham Forest, who may be competing in a European final by then. Their season will conclude with a match at Brighton.
A Different Look on the Pitch
Separately, Manchester United players wore a different jersey during the match against Brentford. Instead of their usual kit featuring their main sponsor, Snapdragon, the team donned ‘RED’ shirts. This change was part of a humanitarian initiative, highlighting the club’s commitment to social causes beyond the pitch.
