Lisa Kudrow reveals raw behind-the-scenes story

Lisa Kudrow, renowned for her role as Phoebe Buffay in the iconic sitcom Friends, has opened up about the more challenging aspects of her time on the show. She revealed that the female cast faced intense scrutiny from the predominantly male writers’ room, which had a significant impact on their experiences behind the scenes.

Kudrow, now 62, is best known for her portrayal of the free-spirited Phoebe Buffay across all 10 seasons of the comedy. Since its debut in 1994, Friends has become one of the most successful TV shows ever produced. However, even two decades after the series ended, Kudrow has shared some less-than-pleasant memories from her time on set.

In a recent interview with The Times, she spoke about the “mean stuff going on behind the scenes” in the writers’ room. This group, consisting of 12 to 15 staff members, was primarily composed of men. Kudrow described how the pressure was immense, especially given that the show was recorded in front of a live audience of 400 people.

“Don’t forget we were recording in front of a live audience of 400, and if you messed up one of these writers’ lines or it didn’t get the perfect response, they could be like, ‘Can’t the bitch fing read? She’s not even trying. She fed up my line,’” she recalled.

She also mentioned that the writers would engage in discussions about their sexual fantasies involving Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox. “It was intense,” she said. Despite the harsh environment, Kudrow acknowledged that the writers were working long hours, often until 3am, to produce the show. Her approach was to ignore the negativity, stating, “Say what you like about me behind my back because then it doesn’t matter.”

During the run of Friends, writer’s assistant Amaani Lyle filed a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination and sexual harassment in the writers’ room. She claimed that she overheard conversations where the writers discussed what they would like to do sexually to different female cast members and made demeaning comments about another actress. Although the case was dismissed in court in 2006, it highlighted the challenges faced by women in the industry at the time.

Kudrow, who currently stars in the third season of The Comeback on HBO Max, reflected on how her professional life did not change significantly despite Friends becoming a massive success by its second season. “Nobody cared about me,” she said. “There were certain parts of [my talent agency] that just referred to me as ‘the sixth Friend.’”

When reminded that she was the first of the cast to win an Emmy, receiving it for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1998, she responded, “Yeah, but there was no vision for me, and no expectations about the kind of career I could have. There was just, like, ‘boy, is she lucky she got on that show.’”

After Friends, Kudrow continued to build her career with roles in Web Therapy, the sitcom Space Force, and appearances in films such as Easy A, Booksmart, and Long Shot.
