My Policing Philosophy Driven by Long-Term Vision – IG

A Visionary Approach to Policing

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has shared insights into his leadership philosophy and the long-term vision that has guided his career in law enforcement. During an interactive session with crime reporters in Lagos, Disu reflected on his approach to policing and the importance of media relations.

Disu emphasized that his methods have always been rooted in a vision he developed early in his career. He explained that even as a cadet, he imagined how he would lead if he ever reached the top of the police force. This foresight has shaped his leadership style and decision-making process throughout his tenure.

“My approach to policing has always been guided by a long-term vision. I had a picture of how I would act if I became Commissioner of Police. Even as a cadet, I thought of what I would do if I became IG,” he said.

Building Relationships with the Media

Disu also highlighted the crucial role that the media plays in the work of the police. He admitted that when he first arrived in Lagos, he was initially apprehensive about dealing with journalists. However, he decided to face this challenge head-on by organizing a meeting where he could engage directly with the media.

“I was so apprehensive of the media. I wondered how I was going to cope with them. And I said let me face it and we called a meeting where I eventually met everybody. I learnt a lot from the media. I bonded with you,” he said.

He further noted that during his time in Lagos State, he encouraged officers under his command to build sincere and respectful relationships with journalists. This emphasis on collaboration has helped foster better communication between the police and the press.

Challenges and Criticism

Recounting his time as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Disu spoke about the challenges he faced. He encountered criticism, including from within the police force, over his engagement style. Some colleagues questioned his methods, suggesting that he was merely performing for public attention.

“When I was commander of RRS, I came under a series of attacks even by policemen. Some said I was doing eye service, but I did not see it that way. I saw it as an opportunity to express myself and my ideas of what policing should be,” he said.

Despite the criticism, Disu remained committed to his vision of policing, believing that open communication and transparency were essential for effective law enforcement.

Gratitude and Collaboration

Disu expressed his appreciation to crime reporters for their contributions to security reporting and their ongoing support for the police. He acknowledged the vital role that journalists play in keeping the public informed and holding authorities accountable.

“I am here to say thank you for everything you’re doing,” he added.

The Importance of Public Engagement

Throughout his career, Disu has emphasized the need for police to engage with the public and the media in a transparent and respectful manner. His leadership style reflects a commitment to building trust and fostering cooperation between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

By maintaining open lines of communication, Disu believes that the police can better understand public concerns and address them effectively. This approach not only enhances public safety but also strengthens the relationship between the police and the people they protect.
