Nelly Korda’s Strong Performance at Chevron Championship
Nelly Korda has managed to secure a five-shot lead heading into the final round of the Chevron Championship, marking the largest 54-hole lead of her career. The American golfer finished the third round with a score of 16-under-par 200, tying the tournament record set by Jennifer Kupcho in 2022, which was the last time the major event was held at Mission Hills in the California desert.
Korda had initially extended her lead to eight shots, but she missed several short putts that prevented her from improving on her six-stroke lead at the halfway mark. Despite this, she remains in a strong position as the world number two, showcasing her dominance throughout the third round with a score of 2-under 70. Her control over the irons on the heavily sloped greens of Memorial Park was impressive, even as her competitors managed to stay within reach.
“I played really solid on the front and then just kind of… not may have lost concentration, but the wind started picking up and then I just put myself into great positions [and] didn’t kind of execute really well,” Korda reflected after the round.
The heat and humidity also posed challenges for Korda, who often carried an umbrella while walking the fairways to protect herself from the sun.
Other Competitors’ Performances
Patty Tavatanakit, who had gone 48 holes without a bogey before making one on the 13th, bounced back with a pair of birdies over the last five holes, finishing with a 69 to get within five shots of Korda. This was a remarkable performance for Tavatanakit, who won this major as a rookie in 2021.
Ruoning Yin of China, a Women’s PGA champion and former world number one, shot a 66, placing her six shots behind Korda. Similarly, Pauline Roussin-Bouchard of France, who recorded a 67, is also six shots behind the leader.
Australian Contenders
Among the Australian golfers, Cassie Porter is the best performer, currently tied for 20th at 3-under. Fifth-ranked Hannah Green delivered her best round of the tournament so far with a 70, moving to 2-under in a tie for 29th. Minjee Lee and Karis Davidson are both at 1-over heading into the final day’s play.
Final Thoughts
As the Chevron Championship approaches its conclusion, Korda’s five-shot lead is a testament to her strong performance throughout the tournament. However, the competition remains fierce, with several players still within striking distance. The final round promises to be an exciting showdown, with Korda looking to maintain her lead and secure another major victory.
