Central Coast Mariners Face Uncertain Future
Outgoing Central Coast coach Warren Moon has expressed optimism about the future of the financially troubled A-League Men club, despite a difficult season that saw them finish ninth in the league. The Mariners’ campaign came to an end with a 4-0 loss to Newcastle in the F3 derby, marking their failure to qualify for the finals.
The team was expected to struggle at the start of the season after losing their treble-winning coach Mark Jackson just before the season began due to ownership issues. However, the club managed to avoid finishing at the bottom of the table, thanks in part to support from the Australian Professional Leagues since January.

Central Coast’s financial troubles date back to when former owner Richard Peil stepped down in 2024, citing funding cuts as a major reason. He handed control of the club back to previous owner Mike Charlesworth. Despite these challenges, Moon remained hopeful that a resolution was near, though he could not confirm details of ongoing ownership discussions.
Recent reports suggest that English Championship side Queens Park Rangers are leading the race to acquire the club. Moon acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the situation but emphasized that there is potential for a brighter future.
“We’re hearing what everyone else is hearing. It’s close, but I’m hoping when it’s finalised there’ll be some clarity for everyone,” Moon said. “There are better days ahead for this football club. There’s no doubt about it.”
He also highlighted the strong culture and identity within the club, regardless of who owns it. “There’s a real DNA. There’s a culture in this building. It doesn’t matter about ownership … this can’t be diminished.”

While the season did not go as planned, Moon admitted that many people had not expected the Mariners to finish anywhere other than last place. His time at the club came to an end as he prepares to return to Brisbane to be with his family.
Moon has not been able to spend much time with his children since Christmas, which has influenced his decision to leave Central Coast. He previously took over as coach of Brisbane Roar in late 2019/20, but was dismissed in 2023.
Brisbane, currently in 11th place on 26 points, is now coached by Michael Valkanis, who replaced Ruben Zadkovich for the current season. Moon has indicated that Brisbane may be a potential destination for him in the future.
“Brisbane’s probably on the cards for me,” Moon said. “I thought I had done a reasonably good job at Brisbane in difficult circumstances, but I think I’ve shown this year I can coach and coach under adversity.”
He added, “I would absolutely relish another opportunity down the track, and who knows? Maybe it’s back at the Mariners.”
