Socceroo’s hat-trick triumph in England

Adrian Segecic’s Remarkable Hat-Trick and the Impact on Australian Football

Adrian Segecic has once again proven why he could be a significant loss for Australian football. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder from Sydney, who recently chose to pursue his international ambitions with Croatia instead of Australia as the World Cup approaches, showcased his talent with a remarkable hat-trick in English football.

Segecic, who made the decision to represent Croatia last month, continued his impressive form on Saturday by scoring his first treble for Portsmouth in their 3-1 victory over Stoke in the Championship. This achievement came just days after he had also found the back of the net during Pompey’s defeat at champions Coventry.

The young star opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a powerful left-footed strike. He then added another goal in the 66th minute from close range and completed his hat-trick with an outstanding 20-yard left-footer eight minutes before the final whistle. This performance not only secured a crucial win for Portsmouth but also marked their first victory at Stoke in 31 years.

For Australian soccer fans, this match was a reminder of the immense talent that has now moved away from the national team. Segecic, who previously played for Sydney FC, represented Australia at under-17, under-20, and under-23 levels. He also received his first senior call-up under Tony Popovic for September’s matches against New Zealand.

This season, Segecic has already scored 10 goals in England’s second-tier league and was once again the center of attention for the 3,000 traveling fans. Portsmouth manager John Mousinho praised Segecic’s performance, stating:

“He has probably over-achieved on what we expected at the start of the season. I will be very surprised if there isn’t interest for ‘Segs’. I suspect there will be a lot of admirers.”

While Segecic may not be heading to North America with the Socceroos, two other Championship strikers might be. Mohamed Toure and Nestory Irankunda are among those who could make the move, though both had quiet performances on Saturday.

Toure, who has been in exceptional form with nine goals and three assists in 10 games for Norwich, was compared to Erling Haaland by his club manager this week. However, in a recent 1-1 draw, he was held back by Cameron Burgess and his Swansea teammates. Meanwhile, Irankunda had a brief appearance for Watford against Middlesbrough, but his side suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat.

Middlesbrough were without their Socceroo midfielder Riley McGree, who is currently sidelined due to injury. Despite this, the team remains confident that McGree will return in time for the upcoming playoffs.

Another Socceroo, Sammy Silvera, could also feature soon after coming off the bench in the final moments of a recent win. These developments highlight the ongoing contributions of Australian players in English football, even as some choose different paths on the international stage.
