Canterbury Bulldogs’ Form and Future Prospects
Canterbury Bulldogs’ football boss, Phil Gould, has expressed that he is “not too worried” about the team’s performance following an unexpected loss to the Brisbane Broncos. Despite the Broncos fielding a depleted side, they managed a comprehensive 32-12 victory against the Bulldogs. This result has left the Dogs with a 3-4 record at the start of the season, with one of their wins coming against the powerful Penrith Panthers.
Gould acknowledged that the Bulldogs have faced inconsistency throughout the season, but he sees some positive signs in their recent performance. “We’re OK. We’re going through a little bit of a rough patch at the moment,” he said on Nine’s 100% Footy. He praised the Broncos for their strong depth and quality play, noting that their performance was expected. However, he also highlighted that there were encouraging moments for the Bulldogs.
“I thought there was some really good signs for the Bulldogs, I thought some of our football on the night was really good and showed great signs for the future,” Gould added. He pointed out that while the Broncos had an edge in scoring tries, the Bulldogs’ performance still showed promise.
Gould also mentioned the impact of key players like Adam Reynolds, who delivered an outstanding kicking game, and Mitchell Moses, whose performance against the Bulldogs had been impressive the week before. “So having that fella who can control the game and keep them on the front foot made a big difference,” he said. While he isn’t overly concerned about the scoreboard, he admits the team is going through a tough phase and needs to overcome it.
Challenges in Team Composition
The Bulldogs have faced intense scrutiny over their form, which currently includes two consecutive losses. On Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, Andrew Johns reiterated his belief that Lachlan Galvin should be playing as a five-eighth rather than a halfback. This suggestion presents a challenge for the Bulldogs, as promising young talent Mitch Woods has been dealing with injury issues, and Matt Burton is more suited to the No.6 position.
Burton could potentially switch to the centres, but Bronson Xerri and Stephen Crichton are the preferred options there. Coach Cameron Ciraldo was asked about Galvin’s suitability for the No.7 jersey after the Broncos loss and referred to his performance against the Panthers. “Do you think two weeks ago (against Penrith) that he was? He’s a 20-year-old half at the moment,” he said. “He would have got a great lesson from a guy who’s had 15 years doing what he is doing but they are only lessons if you learn.”
Looking Ahead
As the Bulldogs prepare for their next match against the Cowboys on Friday night, the focus will be on addressing the current challenges and building on the positive aspects of their recent performances. With key players needing to find their rhythm and the coaching staff making strategic decisions, the team will need to show resilience and consistency to turn their season around.
