A New Era of Community and Compassion in Rugby League
The game of rugby league is set to create a powerful legacy by harnessing the energy of Magic Round, transforming it into an event that goes beyond sport. The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) and national insurer Youi have joined forces to launch a groundbreaking fundraising initiative focused on childhood cancer. This new campaign, named Kick for a Cause, will officially begin during the NRL Magic Round in Brisbane from Friday, May 15 to Sunday, May 17.
The three-day festival has a clear goal: to raise $1 million to improve the care, comfort, and outcomes for children battling cancer across Australia and New Zealand. This ambitious target reflects the commitment of both organizations to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young patients and their families.
A Collaborative Effort with National Reach
All 17 NRL clubs and 11 paediatric cancer centres spanning both nations have signed on as partners. Each centre is strategically located within the community of an NRL club, creating a direct link between the sporting world and the medical sector. This partnership ensures that the funds raised will be distributed through the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation and the Starship Foundation, supporting institutions that provide specialist clinical care, cutting-edge research, and vital support programs for young cancer patients and their families.
Youi has made a significant contribution to the cause by pledging a $1,000 donation for every successful converted try and penalty goal at Magic Round. Additionally, they have doubled this commitment for every field goal scored across the three days of action. This generous pledge highlights the company’s dedication to making a real impact in the fight against childhood cancer.
The Human Impact of Childhood Cancer
Every year, approximately 1,000 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer across Australia and New Zealand. On average, three families receive devastating news each day. This statistic underscores the urgency of the Kick for a Cause initiative and the importance of raising awareness and funds for those affected.
ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys AM has fully supported the campaign, encouraging the rugby league community to come together for something greater than the scoreboard. “Every child fighting cancer deserves the very best care, comfort and hope — and rugby league is stepping up to help deliver it,” he said in a press statement. He emphasized that every kick, every cheer, and every dollar raised will make a real difference for kids and families facing difficult times.
V’landys also thanked Youi for its support of this important initiative and urged fans attending Magic Round in Brisbane, as well as those watching from home, to get behind a worthy cause by helping those in need.
A Shared Vision of Community and Support
Youi CEO Nathaniel Simpson echoed this sentiment, describing the organization’s involvement as a natural extension of their values. “At Youi, our team is on yours, and we’re big believers of the power of community. Supporting strong communities means giving back and investing in causes that genuinely affect the lives of everyday Australians,” Simpson said. He highlighted that cancer and serious illness impact countless families, which is why supporting Aussies through moments that matter is at the heart of who they are.
Beyond the Game: Community Engagement and Support
Beyond the goalposts, all the clubs have linked directly with their local paediatric hospital to coordinate a broader program of community engagement. This includes player hospital visits and exclusive inner sanctum experiences for young cancer patients. These initiatives aim to give children in the toughest fight of their lives a moment of joy and connection with their football heroes.
