T20 World Cup Approaches as India Women Struggle with Confidence in Final 3 Matches

The Indian Women’s Team Faces a Crucial Period

Two weeks ago, the Indian women’s cricket team was in a completely different atmosphere. They had already established their team combinations and were preparing for upcoming matches. However, they struggled to address their challenges, which became evident after a 4-1 series defeat against South Africa. This loss not only cost them their advantages but also left the team in a state of uncertainty, lacking confidence and clear solutions to their problems. With the T20 World Cup set to begin on June 12, the team is under pressure to improve quickly.

The series against South Africa did not have any close results. South Africa consistently outperformed India in nearly all matches. While India managed one victory through brief moments of success, they failed to maintain consistency throughout the series. Their batting performance was weak, and they often collapsed during the late stages of the game. Additionally, frequent changes in team members disrupted their rhythm and cohesion.

Issues Identified in the 2023 World Cup

The opening match of the 2023 World Cup highlighted many of India’s problems, and these issues remained unresolved throughout the tournament. The top-order batting unit did not perform effectively, with one batter appearing to be set while others fell early. This pattern repeated itself in the final T20I match, where Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Deepti Sharma were dismissed cheaply. India lost their second wicket after scoring just 21 runs in four overs, making it difficult for them to recover.

Harmanpreet Kaur was the highest run-scorer for India in the series with 169 runs, but her performance included only 22 runs from 28 balls. Despite chasing a target of 156 runs, which should have been achievable, India’s batting strategy made the target seem more challenging. The middle overs saw a significant slowdown, increasing the required run rate and leading to the team’s downfall.

India started their chase with a 52% chance of winning the match. However, after the powerplay, this probability dropped to 15%, continuing to decline until it reached just 3% by the end of the 16th over. Bharti Fulmali showed some fight with a counter-attacking 40 off 30 balls, but India’s weak start and inability to build momentum ultimately led to their defeat.

South Africa’s Dominance

Laura Wolvaardt played a key role in South Africa’s victory, making batting look easy as India struggled to adjust to the Benoni conditions. Her unbeaten 92 in the final game separated the two teams, as she controlled the batting throughout the match. She completed the middle phase and ended the game by hitting two sixes in the final over. South Africa maintained control of the game despite some imperfections, as players stepped up when needed.

A Strong 50-Over Team

India still maintains its status as the 50-over world champions. The squad possesses exceptional talent that is recognized globally. They defeated Australia because their team contained match-winning players who could beat any opponent on their best day. However, T20 cricket does not allow teams much time to regain their form. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team has now reached their final three T20 international matches before the World Cup.
