A New Chapter for Kysaiah Pickett
A flat Round 2 loss to Fremantle became a pivotal moment for Melbourne, prompting the club to re-evaluate its strategy and ultimately unleashing Kysaiah Pickett into the midfield. This shift marked a significant turning point in Pickett’s career, as he began to tap into his full potential.
Frustrated by a role that wasn’t fully utilising his strengths, Pickett reached a crucial decision — one that has since fuelled his explosive performance over the past month. The idea of moving to the midfield had been discussed for some time, but with Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver, and Jack Viney firmly established around the ball, opportunities were limited. That changed in 2026 when new coach Steven King took charge, leading to a reshaped on-ball brigade driven by personnel changes and absences. This opened the door for Pickett, and he seized it with both hands.
King praised Pickett’s determination during an interview on AFL360, highlighting his desire to become a full-time midfielder and strive for excellence. “He’s got that inner drive where he wants to be a full-time mid, he wants to be the best in the game,” King said. “It was about after round 2, we got touched up by Fremantle and he was a bit frustrated being forward in the side a little bit. He sat down with (midfield coach) Nathan Jones and myself and said, ‘I want to play a little bit more inside’. Nathan was really firm with him around the requirements of being a full-time mid, and Kozzy has met us halfway with that.”
Pickett’s talent and forward-half ability have truly come to the forefront since this change. His performance against Richmond in the annual Anzac Day eve clash was particularly impressive, as he amassed 27.5 player ratings points for his four-goal, 29-disposal effort. This game marked his second-best career performance, showcasing his versatility and impact on the field.
Since the Dockers clash, Pickett has attended centre ball-ups at an average of 80 percent, a statistic that was not common under previous coach Simon Goodwin. His recent surge in form has coincided with a challenging personal period, as he frequently travels to Darwin to spend time with his children.
In the lead-up to the clash with the Tigers, Pickett made the trip to the Northern Territory, a decision that ultimately proved to be a positive influence. King reflected on the importance of flexibility for players, stating, “If you strip it back, from one father to another, if someone wants to see their children, and how can you provide them a workplace where it’s flexible enough to do both.”
King expressed his trust in Pickett, emphasizing that he believes in allowing players the freedom to balance their personal lives with their professional commitments. “I want to trust my players, I want to trust Kozzy to do the right thing, and let him know that he’s got the flexibility to do both. I think we saw it paid back in spades on Friday night.”
This combination of personal commitment and professional dedication has led to a remarkable transformation for Pickett, positioning him as a key player for Melbourne. His journey from frustration to success highlights the importance of adaptability and support within a team environment. As Pickett continues to thrive in the midfield, fans can expect even more exciting performances from this talented athlete.
