Bell joins in to help Aussie mate strike gold

A New Dawn for Gloucestershire

Australia’s lone 2026 county captain, Cameron Bancroft, has experienced a challenging start to the English season. However, things have taken a positive turn, largely due to the impressive performance of his teammate, Gabe Bell, from Gloucestershire.

In a recent match at Derby, Bell delivered a standout performance that played a crucial role in securing a 10-wicket win for Gloucestershire. This victory marked their first of the season after three consecutive losses, offering much-needed relief for the team and Bancroft.

Bell, a Tasmanian fast bowler, was the standout performer for Gloucestershire. In the first innings, he took 3-84, and in the second, he added another 3-44, contributing significantly to the team’s comprehensive win. The visitors managed to chase down the required 36 runs in less than five overs, with the threat of rain looming over the game.

Bancroft, who is 33 years old and a former Test opener, was at the crease on 19no as Gloucestershire didn’t hesitate in their pursuit of victory. Bell’s performance was particularly notable, as he had not made a significant impact in his first two matches, taking only one wicket. However, his three wickets against Lancashire in their previous match hinted at potential, and he proved to be a key player in the match at Derby.

One of Bell’s most memorable moments came when he dismissed nightwatchman Ben Aitchison with a well-directed delivery, leading to a return catch. He also made a critical late breakthrough by having Shoaib Bashir caught by Bancroft at second slip, despite some late resistance from the opposition.

Other Highlights from the Championship

In other developments, Beau Webster’s Warwickshire moved to the top of the table in the first division after a draw with reigning champions Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. Kyle Verreynne scored an impressive 115, while Nottinghamshire added 227 on the final day for the loss of three wickets. They declared on 7-537 with a lead of 357. Webster finished with an impressive 2-55 from his 23 overs.

Emilio Gay, an uncapped batter, gave his England hopes a significant boost by steering Durham to a brilliant eight-wicket win over Lancashire in their first division clash. Gay remained unbeaten with a magnificent 159, adding to his growing reputation as a Test contender. Alongside David Bedingham’s 129no, this performance will undoubtedly strengthen his case for selection.

Durham were chasing 336 at Chester-le-Street, with veteran Jimmy Anderson in the Lancashire attack. After losing both openers, Durham were 2-46 before Gay and Bedingham formed a formidable partnership, scoring an unbeaten 290 for the third wicket.

At Headingley, Joe Root added three wickets to his first-innings century, but Yorkshire were unable to force a victory over Sussex. Tom Clark’s knock of 93 helped secure a draw for Sussex.

Meanwhile, at the Oval, runs continued to flow as Tom Westley hit 136 and Dean Elgar finished 107 not out. Essex drew with Surrey, maintaining their strong form in the competition.
