Rising Star Kysaiah Pickett Captivates AFL with Unstoppable Form
Melbourne Demons’ coach Steven King has been vocal in his admiration for the club’s standout player, Kysaiah Pickett, as the Australian Football League (AFL) begins to fully recognize the young star’s remarkable talent. Following a recent victory over Richmond, Pickett made headlines when he expressed his desire to become the best in the game during an interview with Fox Sports. His recent performances suggest that this ambition is not just a dream but a tangible goal.
King praised Pickett’s form on Fox Footy’s AFL360 program, highlighting the player’s natural competitiveness and drive. “He reminds everyone why you love the game,” King said. “He’s got that inner drive. He wants to be a full-time mid, he wants to be the best in the game… he’s got that innate competitiveness to be great.”
Pickett’s journey to prominence has not been without challenges. After a loss in Round 2 against Fremantle, he took the initiative to meet with Nathan Jones and King to advocate for more time in the midfield. Jones, as the line coach, had clear expectations for Pickett if he were to receive more playing time. However, Pickett has surpassed these expectations, averaging 24.5 disposals, over seven tackles, and more than a goal per game this season.
The Demons have emerged as one of the most exciting stories of the year, sitting comfortably within the top four just seven games into King’s coaching tenure. When reflecting on the team’s early success, King credited their courage with the ball and their ability to quickly recover from mistakes as key factors in their rise.
“I’m still pinching myself,” King admitted. “I think getting a couple of early wins was really important. I felt like a bit of a salesman early, saying ‘this is what I want,’ but we had no proof. Now there’s a little body of work – we’ll continue to evolve, and we’ll look different in a month’s time. But so far, the foundation of what I set out is starting to develop, which is really promising.”
Looking ahead, the Demons will face a crucial challenge as they travel to Sydney for a top-four clash against the Swans on Sunday afternoon. This match will be a true test of the team’s progress and their ability to maintain their strong performance throughout the season.
