Van Dijk: Salah Fit for Liverpool Farewell After Injury

Virgil van Dijk Expresses Confidence in Mohamed Salah’s Return

Virgil van Dijk, the Liverpool captain, has expressed his belief that Mohamed Salah will receive a significant farewell at Anfield, even if his time with the club has come to an early end. Van Dijk is confident that Salah will do everything possible to return before the end of the season and continue playing for the Reds.

Salah was forced off during Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace due to a hamstring injury. The head coach, Arne Slot, remains uncertain about whether Salah will be back on the pitch before the campaign concludes. The 33-year-old player is set to undergo a scan to determine the severity of the injury, and Van Dijk is hopeful that he will recover in time.

“I hope so,” Van Dijk said. “There will be a medical assessment, and then that will determine what the issue is going to be. I know he is doing everything in his power to be back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Liverpool has four matches left in the season, starting with Sunday’s visit to Old Trafford. Their other fixtures include a trip to Aston Villa, a home game against Chelsea on 9 May, and a match against Brentford on 24 May. These games had previously been seen as Salah’s final appearances for the club.

“If you get injured at this stage of the season, especially in the situation he is in, there are only two more home games left for him. It’s a combination of feelings that go through your mind when you go off,” Van Dijk explained.

“The reality is he has to get scanned, assessed, hopefully he won’t be long, but at this point I don’t know. Maybe he’s back next week, maybe not. I have no idea.”

Salah holds the third-highest goal-scoring record in Liverpool’s history, with 257 goals in 440 appearances. Van Dijk believes that Salah’s achievements, including winning the Champions League in 2019, the Premier League twice, and the PFA Player of the Year award three times, mean he will be celebrated, regardless of whether he plays for the club again.

“He will get the send-off regardless,” Van Dijk added. “I don’t think that is the thing at this point. We shouldn’t think too far ahead. Knowing Mo, he is a quick healer with the right people around us, and let’s see.”
