Nedra Talley Ross, last Ronette, passes away at 80

Nedra Talley Ross, the last surviving member of the iconic 1960s girl group The Ronettes, has passed away at the age of 80. Her death was announced on Sunday, 26 April, following her passing at her home. As a key member of the band alongside her cousins Ronnie Spector and Estelle Bennett, Ross played an essential role in shaping the sound and style that defined the era.

The news of her death was shared through a heartfelt statement on the Ronettes’ official social media accounts. The message highlighted her lasting impact, stating: “As a founding member of The Ronettes, along with her beloved cousins Ronnie and Estelle, Nedra’s voice, style and spirit helped define a sound that would change music. Her contribution to the group’s story and their defining influence will live forever.”

“Rest peacefully dear Nedra. Thanks for the magic.”

The Ronettes were formed in 1957 and gained widespread recognition after collaborating with legendary music producer Phil Spector. Despite only releasing one studio album, Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica, in 1964, the group became a cultural icon and left an indelible mark on the music industry. Their influence can be heard in the works of artists such as Blondie, the New York Dolls, and Amy Winehouse.

Some of their most famous songs include “Be My Baby,” “Baby, I Love You,” “(The Best Part Of) Breakin’ Up,” and “Walking In The Rain.” These tracks not only showcased their vocal talents but also helped establish them as pioneers in the girl-group genre.

In 1964, the Rolling Stones were the opening act for The Ronettes during their UK tour, and the group later opened for the Beatles on their 1966 US tour. This made them the only girl group to tour with the Beatles, a significant milestone in their career. However, the group disbanded in 1967.

In 2007, The Ronettes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their legacy as one of the most influential acts of the 1960s.

Talley Ross was married to her husband, with whom she had four children. Her husband passed away in 2023. Estelle Bennett, another cousin and member of the group, died in 2009, while Ronnie Spector passed away in 2022.
