Parents of teen who died from sudden cardiac arrest push for heart screening in young athletes

A Life Filled with Passion and Purpose

Josh Oguns was a young man who lived life to the fullest. Known for his go-getter attitude, respectfulness, kindness, and always having a smile on his face, he left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. While he achieved many things in his short life, what stood out most was his deep love for sports.

“He was very committed to it; he would train and train hard. He was a really disciplined athlete,” his mother, Taiye Oguns, shared. Josh’s main passion was soccer, but he also played touch football, athletics, martial arts, and basketball. His dedication to these sports was evident in every game he played.

What began as an ordinary Saturday of sports in July last year turned into a tragic event. After playing soccer earlier that day, Josh suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during a basketball game. He passed away 13 days later at just 14 years old. “We miss him a lot,” Ms. Oguns said. “Joshua was just an easy-going boy, always happy and always just very helpful. Not having him in that space is really quite difficult, but we are taking one day at a time.”

Discovering a Hidden Heart Condition

During the efforts to save Josh’s life, doctors discovered that he had an undiagnosed heart condition—an abnormal blood supply to the left side of his heart. “There was no sign, no sign whatsoever,” Josh’s father, Joe Oguns, said. “No young person should die from doing what they love.”

This heartbreaking experience has led Josh’s parents to take action. They have established the Josh4Hearts Foundation, a charity dedicated to keeping young athletes safe from sudden cardiac arrest. “We are hoping that this can be an opportunity to raise awareness and help other families [so] hopefully they will not have to go through what we have had to endure,” Ms. Oguns explained.

The foundation’s primary goal is to encourage sporting clubs and organizations to refer their young players for cardiac screening. Additionally, it aims to support local communities and sporting clubs in responding effectively to sudden cardiac arrest during games and training sessions.

“Every single second counts because the first 3 minutes are the most critical time … if you are waiting for the ambulance to arrive, it’s probably too late,” Mr. Oguns said. He emphasized that cardiac arrest in an athlete is a highly survivable event if recognized and addressed promptly.

A Bold Initiative for Athletes

While young athletes are often seen as the healthiest members of society, one in 300 may carry a potentially dangerous underlying heart condition, according to Macquarie University associate professor Hari Raju. He noted that while many professional sporting codes screen their players for heart issues, the same cannot be said for amateur sports.

“There is very little, if any, in fact I am not aware of any program like this in the country outside of professional athletes,” Dr. Raju said. “This is a really ambitious venture in the Australian landscape.”

Despite the rarity of sudden cardiac arrest in athletes, Dr. Raju stressed the importance of taking preventive measures. “If somebody collapses, outside the context of a head injury, then you should assume that that individual has had a cardiac arrest,” he said. He recommended that individual sporting clubs invest in basic life support training for all players and coaches—a simple but effective intervention.

Dr. Raju pointed to high-profile cases such as soccer player Christian Eriksen, who suffered an on-field cardiac arrest. “The kind of thing we are looking at here is to try and ensure that amateur athletes have access to a similar level of support,” he said.

Building a Safer Future for Young Athletes

The Josh4Hearts Foundation is working to create a safer environment for young athletes across Australia. By promoting cardiac screening and emergency response training, the foundation hopes to prevent future tragedies and provide support to families who might otherwise face unimaginable loss.

As the Oguns family continues their mission, they remain focused on making a difference. Their story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of vigilance, education, and community support in protecting the lives of young athletes.
