All Blacks Star Speaks on Hansen’s ‘Copycat’ Springboks Claim After Robertson’s Exit

The Evolution of Rugby Tactics and the All Blacks’ Path Forward

Stephen Donald, a former rugby world cup winner, has shared his insights on how the All Blacks should approach their future strategy under coach Dave Rennie. He believes that Rennie’s path should be distinct from that of Scott Robertson, who he claims attempted to emulate the Springboks’ style of play.

South Africa, currently the back-to-back world champions, have established themselves as the leading innovators in the sport. Their success is largely attributed to the leadership of Rassie Erasmus, who has transformed the way the game is played. Donald highlights that while the Boks are setting the standard, it doesn’t necessarily mean other teams should follow suit.

Scott Robertson’s Possible Misstep

Donald suggests that previous All Blacks coach Scott Robertson may have made a mistake by trying to incorporate elements of the Springboks’ game into the New Zealand team’s approach. This shift, according to Donald, led the All Blacks away from their traditional strengths.

In a recent discussion on The Aftermatch with Kirst and Beav, Donald referenced comments from Sir Steve Hansen, who questioned whether the All Blacks should follow South Africa’s path. Donald emphasized that each nation has its own unique strengths and that the All Blacks should focus on what they do best.

“I saw some quotes from the great Sir Steve and he was talking about how South Africa is out there at the moment but it doesn’t mean you have to copycat everything and he was referring to things like the [bench] splits and the hybrid players, and all this sort of thing,” he said.

Donald believes that the All Blacks should return to their roots, focusing on speed and tempo in their gameplay. He points to the Hurricanes and Chiefs as examples of teams that embody these principles. By combining the streetwise smarts of the Crusaders with their strong forward pack, Donald thinks the All Blacks could form a competitive team.

The Importance of the Greatest Rivalry Series

While the All Blacks have the inaugural Nations Championship to look forward to, the upcoming series against the Springboks will be a crucial test of their progress. The tour in August will see the All Blacks face all four South African franchises and compete in four Tests, with the final match taking place on neutral soil in the USA.

Donald acknowledges that the All Blacks don’t get to play as many South African teams as they used to, especially at the club and provincial level. However, he doesn’t see this as a major concern.

“The Champions Cup is getting decided at the moment, it’s a French team versus an Irish team and none of the South African teams went too deep, but I don’t think it will be an area of concern,” he said.

He also notes that many South African players are currently in Japan, which might affect their performance. However, he remains confident in the depth of the Springboks squad under Rassie Erasmus.

A New Era for the All Blacks

As the All Blacks prepare for their upcoming challenges, the focus will be on finding a balance between innovation and tradition. While the Springboks have set a high standard, Donald believes that the All Blacks can carve out their own path by leveraging their unique strengths.

With the right approach, the All Blacks can continue to be a formidable force in international rugby, even as the landscape of the sport continues to evolve. The coming matches against the Springboks will be a key indicator of whether this strategy will pay off.
