The Return of Queen Mia and the Royal Legacy of The Princess Diaries
The world of The Princess Diaries is set to make a grand return as the franchise prepares for its long-awaited third installment. This time, it’s under the reign of Queen Mia herself, who has become an iconic figure in pop culture since the 2001 film starring Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews, and Héctor Elizondo. The original movie was a massive success, earning $108 million and becoming a Disney phenomenon that resonated with generations of fans.
Since the first film, fans have eagerly awaited a sequel, and now, after years of speculation, the palace doors are finally opening. Director Adele Lim has confirmed that the third film will focus on “getting the story right,” emphasizing the deep love the franchise has garnered across different generations. Unlike traditional princess stories that often revolve around wish fulfillment, The Princess Diaries 3 aims to shift the narrative toward queens, exploring a woman fully embracing her power and responsibilities.
Lim shared these insights with Variety during the Gold Gala carpet event, hinting at major returns from the original films. She mentioned that longtime fans can expect plenty of surprises, especially for Queen Mia, played by Anne Hathaway. “If you were a fan of the original first two movies, I think you can look forward to a lot of fun returns,” she said.
A New Chapter in Genovia
While production timelines are still being finalized, Lim confirmed that Genovia will once again be depicted in all its royal glory across Europe. The director is also expanding another beloved universe through HBO’s upcoming Crazy Rich Asians sequel series, returning to the world of Rachel Chu and Nick Young after the original film’s global success.
Before the return of Queen Mia, the franchise had already established itself as one of Disney’s most cherished nostalgia periods. Anne Hathaway’s journey from Mia Thermopolis to the Queen of Genovia marked a significant turning point in the series. The second film, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, released on August 11, 2004, transformed Mia from an awkward princess into a rightful queen. The film explored themes of tradition and personal choice, as Mia refused an arranged marriage and convinced Parliament to abolish the rule entirely.
The film concluded with Queen Clarisse stepping down, allowing Mia to officially become Her Majesty Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia. This moment not only solidified the sequel’s place in the franchise but also contributed to its eventual status as a Disney nostalgia classic.
A Star-Studded Return
The sequel also brought back the beloved royal circle from the original film while introducing future Hollywood stars. Julie Andrews returned as Queen Clarisse, alongside Héctor Elizondo as Joe and Heather Matarazzo as Lilly Moscovitz. Chris Pine made his major film debut as Nicholas Devereaux, a role that would later lead to his rise as a blockbuster leading man. Other cast members included Raven-Symoné, John Rhys-Davies, and even a young Abigail Breslin in a cameo appearance.
As Queen Mia prepares to reclaim her throne once again, fans remain excited to see what surprises Adele Lim has in store for the next chapter. With the promise of familiar faces, new adventures, and a deeper exploration of power and identity, The Princess Diaries 3 is shaping up to be a highly anticipated return to the world of Genovia.
