Victoria to offer free meningococcal B vaccines for Year 10 students

Free Vaccinations for Meningococcal B to Be Available for Year 10 Students

Starting from January next year, Year 10 students in Australia will have access to free vaccinations against meningococcal B as part of a new government initiative. This program is funded with $9 million and aims to add the B strain to the existing meningococcal A, C, W, and Y vaccines already provided under the National Immunisation Program (NIP).

Meningococcal B is a severe bacterial infection that can lead to serious complications or even death within just 24 to 36 hours. In Victoria, there have been four reported cases this year, with 18 cases recorded over the past 12 months. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, up to one in 10 patients with meningococcal disease may die, and up to one in five survivors could face long-term health issues.

Protecting Teenagers Through Vaccination

Anita Muñoz, chair of RACGP Victoria, has welcomed the announcement, emphasizing the importance of the vaccine in protecting teenagers who are particularly vulnerable. She expressed concern that in a developed country like Australia, it should not be acceptable for any adolescent to die from meningococcal B. “I don’t feel comfortable with the notion that something as fundamental to our health system as vaccination should be determined by the disposable income of a child’s parent,” she said.

Previously, the meningococcal B vaccine was only available through private GPs and could cost hundreds of dollars, requiring multiple doses. This high cost has acted as a barrier to vaccine uptake. In 2024, a Ballarat mother raised funds to vaccinate an entire Year 11 class, highlighting the challenges families face in accessing this critical protection.

Dr. Muñoz also pointed out that infants are at risk of the disease and urged the government to expand funding to cover more groups. “I think we are halfway there. I would like the conversation to continue,” she said.

Government Response and Future Plans

Health Minister Harriet Shing stated that while the program is currently funded for Year 10 students, the government is exploring additional funding options. “We’re continuing to advocate to the Commonwealth to consider adding this important vaccine to the NIP,” Ms. Shing said. However, the government has not confirmed whether the program will continue beyond next year.

Other states, such as South Australia and Queensland, already provide free meningococcal B vaccines to eligible infants and teenagers.

A Mother’s Mission to Raise Awareness

The recent announcement held special significance for Melbourne mother Norliah Syer-Peterson, whose son Levi died suddenly last year after contracting meningococcal B. Since then, she has dedicated herself to raising awareness about the disease and advocating for better access to the vaccine.

“I need to tell people about this because I don’t want anybody else to go through this,” she said. After Levi’s death in September, she made it her mission to educate parents about vaccination and push for meningococcal B vaccine funding.

In December, she delivered a petition with over 41,000 signatures to parliament, urging the government to fund the vaccine. “You don’t want your child to die in vain, but I know my child, and my child would want me to help work towards stopping other children from suffering a disability,” she said.

Dr. Muñoz praised Ms. Syer-Peterson for her role in driving change. “No-one has been more instrumental in making this change than Norliah Syer-Peterson,” she said. “She made it clear how fast, brutal, and unforgiving meningococcal B is, and the government has responded.”

Ms. Syer-Peterson, however, declined to take full credit for the announcement. “It’s not just because of me. I’m not going to take credit for every single bit of advocacy that has been done in the past,” she said. “I think it just got to a stage where somebody, somewhere along the line, actually listened this time.”
