Aussie athlete faces harsh criticism for returning to sport 10 weeks post-birth

A Remarkable Return to Netball

Paige Hadley, a prominent netball player from Australia, made an incredible return to the sport just 10 weeks after giving birth. Her comeback was meant to be a source of inspiration for many, showcasing her dedication and strength as both a mother and an athlete. However, this journey has not been without its challenges.

Hadley welcomed her son, Tully, in late February and quickly returned to action with the NSW Swifts. Despite her remarkable physical and mental recovery, she has faced some negative comments online. These remarks have had an impact on her, but she remains determined to continue playing the game she loves.

‘My passion for the game is stronger than ever, so why should I have to choose between becoming a mum and playing netball?’ Hadley shared with the ABC. She noted that not everyone supported her decision, with some viewing it as a joke or something unrealistic.

Dealing with Negative Comments

Hadley has encountered various negative comments since her return. Some of these include: ‘Why are you even trying, just go be a mum’ and ‘Once he’s here you won’t even want to be a netballer.’ These statements have been difficult for her to hear, especially given her deep love for her son.

‘I love my little baby boy tenfold, I would do anything for him, so to hear comments like, ‘Paige should be home with her son’, that’s really hard,’ she said. However, she emphasized that she wants women to know they don’t have to choose between being a mother and pursuing their careers.

A Strong Career and Legacy

Hadley’s career in netball is already impressive. As a two-time premiership winner, she has played in five grand finals and has also won two Netball World Cups while representing Australia. Her achievements highlight her dedication and talent in the sport.

Despite the small minority who have criticized her, Hadley remains defiant. She believes that every person’s experience with pregnancy and motherhood is unique. ‘Everyone seems to have a different opinion on my return but the thing about pregnancy and motherhood is it is different for everyone,’ she said.

Inspiring Others

As a senior player for the Swifts, Hadley hopes to inspire many people in her life, particularly her son. She wants him to understand that his mother is brave and courageous, and that one doesn’t have to choose a single path to define their life.

‘I hope when he’s older, he realises that his mum is brave and courageous and you don’t have to choose one single thing to define you,’ Hadley added. She also questioned why such comments are directed at her and not her partner. ‘No-one says that to my partner, so why should they say that to me?’

Her goal is to show her son that anything is possible, no matter the challenges one may face. Through her actions, Hadley continues to demonstrate that being a mother and a professional athlete can coexist, inspiring others to pursue their dreams without limitations.
