Manchester City secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Chelsea in extra-time, marking a dramatic end to Sam Kerr’s hopes of a fourth FA Cup triumph with the Blues. The Matildas star was instrumental in the competition, scoring her 19th goal in 17 matches, but her dream of a Wembley farewell was dashed. Mary Fowler, her Matildas teammate, played a crucial role in the outcome.
The match at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea leading 2-0 late in the second half, seemingly in control. However, an individual effort from Fowler in the 86th minute reignited hope for Manchester City. The Citizens eventually prevailed in extra time, thanks to a brace from Khadija Shaw. Despite Kerr’s efforts, she had another goal disallowed, adding to the heartbreak of the night.
Kerr, who is set to join Denver in America’s NWSL next season, was left without the opportunity to celebrate a final appearance at Wembley. Meanwhile, Fowler and her teammates will face Brighton in the final after the Seagulls pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory over Liverpool in the other semi-final.

Brighton’s path to the final was nothing short of remarkable. They came back from a 2-0 deficit after just 22 minutes, with a stoppage-time winner sealing their place in the final. The team is coached by Dario Vidosic, a former Socceroo, who could become the first Australian manager to lead an English team to FA Cup glory.
Vidosic, 39, previously managed Melbourne City in the A-League Women before making his mark in England. He expressed immense pride after the victory, particularly highlighting the dramatic 95th-minute winner by substitute Nadine Noordam.
“It is a nice feeling when almost the last kick of the game hits the back of the net and sends us to Wembley,” Vidosic said. “The message to the girls will be ‘enjoy this moment, they deserve this moment.’ We want to continuously get better, and we want to go undefeated for the rest of the season.”
In addition to Vidosic’s achievements, the Brighton squad includes Matildas star Charli Rule, further strengthening the connection between the club and Australian football.
As the FA Cup final approaches, all eyes will be on Manchester City and Brighton, with both teams eager to etch their names into history. The stage is set for a thrilling encounter, with fans across the globe anticipating what promises to be an unforgettable match.
