Sally Field Reveals Robin Williams Was ‘Unfunny’ on ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ Set

Sally Field’s Unique Memories of Robin Williams

Sally Field has shared several memories of working with the legendary actor and comedian Robin Williams during the filming of the 1993 comedy Mrs. Doubtfire. One particular memory involved her not laughing at his jokes, which reportedly drove him almost mad. While Williams was known for his incredible comedic talent and ability to make everyone around him laugh, Field found his humor unimpressive.

During the production, Williams often improvised jokes that made his co-stars burst into laughter. However, Field remained unaffected by his humor, much to his frustration. Years later, she reflected on how he tried different approaches to make her laugh, but none worked. “It was so unfunny,” she said.

A Simple Joke That Finally Made Her Laugh

Despite Williams’ efforts, it wasn’t until a casual moment at a restaurant that Field finally laughed. Her co-star Pierce Brosnan, who played Stu in Mrs. Doubtfire, made a fart noise with his arm. This simple, childish joke was enough to make her laugh, much to the amusement of everyone present.

Williams, who played Daniel Hillard, a struggling actor and divorcee, brought a unique energy to the film. His portrayal of a desperate father who goes undercover as a British nanny to spend more time with his children was both funny and touching. Although Field didn’t find his jokes funny, she still remembers the warmth and kindness he showed during their time on set.

A Kind Gesture from Robin Williams

In an interview with PEOPLE, Field shared another memorable moment involving Williams. During the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire, she received a call informing her that her father, Richard, had suffered a second massive stroke while in a nursing home. Field had already instructed doctors not to resuscitate him, as it was what he would have wanted.

After receiving the news, she had to film a courtroom divorce scene that mirrored her own childhood as the daughter of divorced parents. She was devastated, and Williams noticed her emotional state. Without hesitation, he urged the director, Chris Columbus, to end the shoot for the day.

“He was such a diamond of a soul. I adored him,” Field said, reflecting on Williams’ compassion and kindness.

A Lasting Legacy

Even though Field didn’t find Williams’ jokes funny, she still fondly remembers the late actor’s humanity and warmth. He was not only a talented actor and comedian but also a kind-hearted individual who made a lasting impact on those around him.

Field, who recently starred in Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures, continues to cherish the memories of working with Williams. Decades after his passing, Robin Williams remains an unforgettable figure, remembered not just for his skills but also for his genuine compassion.
