Warriors let Metcalf talk to rivals after teammate’s new deal

Luke Metcalf’s Future at the Warriors in Question

Warriors playmaker Luke Metcalf has been given the green light to explore potential moves to other clubs in 2027, following a significant development involving his teammate and fellow halves star, Tanah Boyd. Reports indicate that Boyd has signed a long-term contract extension with the club, securing his place at the Warriors until at least the end of the 2029 season.

Boyd’s impressive performance this year, especially during Metcalf’s absence due to an ACL injury from 2025, has seen him take control of the halfback position. His 24 try involvements have played a key role in the Warriors’ strong position on the NRL ladder.

Despite Metcalf returning to the field in Round 4, he has faced setbacks with a hamstring injury, which allowed Boyd to cement his spot as the primary halfback. Even when both players have been on the field together this season, Metcalf has primarily been used as a five-eighth by coach Andrew Webster, despite his preference for the No.7 jersey. This has led to Metcalf spending time on the bench, with Chanel Harris-Tavita making a strong case for the No.6 role.

The situation prompted Metcalf’s management to meet with Warriors officials to gain clarity on the 27-year-old’s future. The meeting resulted in a dramatic turn of events when the Warriors released a statement confirming they had “acceded” to a request from Metcalf’s management to speak with other teams.

“We will not make any further comment on this matter until a further update is provided by Luke and or his management,” said Warriors boss Cameron George. This comes after Metcalf signed a lucrative extension last year, aiming to be the club’s long-term No.7. However, his name was notably absent from the team list for the upcoming match against the Broncos in Magic Round.

Boyd’s emergence as Webster’s first-choice halfback has raised concerns for Metcalf about his long-term prospects. League reporter Dean Ritchie explained that the meeting was not confrontational but rather focused on understanding where Metcalf fits into the club’s plans.

“It wasn’t anything confrontational. It wasn’t ‘we want a release’,” Ritchie said. “It was more, ‘where do you see Luke Metcalf in the club’s plans’ and where do they see Metcalf playing. They aren’t talking walkout yet.”

Metcalf’s desire to play as a seven has become a central point of discussion. “Luke thinks of himself as a seven and an elite seven. I’m not saying his nose is out of joint but I am saying someone has taken his spot and he wants to find out what his future is at the club.”

Former premiership winner Braith Anasta expressed confusion over the situation, suggesting that Metcalf and Boyd could form a powerful halves combination. However, News Corp league reporter Brent Read believes it is inevitable that Metcalf will leave the club after this season.

“I don’t think he’ll be there next year. Because he wants to play halfback and he’s not going to be the halfback there,” Read said. “It seems as though he’s not overly happy playing six if you read the tea leaves.”

The situation highlights a growing tension within the Warriors’ halves department. While Boyd has established himself as the preferred halfback, Metcalf’s aspirations and preferences may lead to a change in his career path. As rival clubs prepare for potential interest in Metcalf, the coming months will be crucial in determining his future.
