Warriors spring Luke Metcalf contract surprise

New Zealand Warriors Halfback Luke Metcalf Considers Future Options

New Zealand Warriors halfback Luke Metcalf has been granted permission to explore potential opportunities outside of the club, with a possible transfer on the horizon. The player is currently under contract with the Auckland-based team until the end of 2028, following a new deal signed in the days leading up to November 1 last year. At that time, it was seen as one of the club’s most strategic moves.

Metcalf was performing at an exceptional level during the first half of 2025, leading the Dally M Medal count by a significant margin before an ACL injury cut his season short. This injury kept him out of action during the early rounds of 2026, allowing Tanah Boyd to step into his role and quickly become one of the standout players in the competition.

Boyd’s performance was so impressive that when Metcalf returned, he was moved to the five-eighth position—a role he had previously played during his junior years with the Cronulla Sharks and when he first joined the Warriors alongside Shaun Johnson. Although the move to halfback surprised many, it proved to be a successful decision for coach Andrew Webster, as Metcalf excelled in his new role.

However, his return to five-eighth did not go as smoothly. The Warriors suffered two consecutive losses before Metcalf injured his thumb and has not appeared on the field since. In their most recent match against the Eels, he was part of the six-man bench but did not make it onto the pitch.

According to reports from News Corp, internal discussions between the Warriors and Metcalf have led to the club allowing him to explore options on the open market. While it is expected that Metcalf will remain with the Warriors for the remainder of the current season, there are indications that he could be playing for a different team in 2027.

Tanah Boyd, who is reportedly set to re-sign with the club, is now seen as the primary candidate to wear the number seven jersey in Auckland moving forward. The Warriors also have young talents Jett Cleary and Luke Hanson within their system, which adds complexity to Metcalf’s situation as he approaches his 27th year.

It was previously reported that the Perth Bears showed interest in Metcalf before he decided to re-sign with the Warriors. Given their limited recruitment efforts so far, they could potentially re-enter the race for his services. Tyran Wishart and Toby Sexton are currently considered the likely starting halves for the Bears, but Metcalf would represent a significant upgrade.

Other clubs in Sydney, such as the St George Illawarra Dragons and Canterbury Bulldogs, may also express interest in securing Metcalf’s services.

Metcalf has openly stated his desire to play halfback, as he mentioned to SEN Radio ahead of his return, despite being named at five-eighth. His future remains uncertain, but the possibility of a move to a different team is now on the table.
