Sarah Beeny on the rough patches of her 23-year marriage

A Refreshing Take on a 23-Year Marriage

Sarah Beeny, the 54-year-old presenter known for her work on Property Ladder, has shared an honest and insightful perspective on her long-term relationship with her husband, Graham Swift. Their marriage, which has spanned over two decades, hasn’t been without its challenges, but Sarah’s candid reflections offer a refreshing take on what it means to stay together through thick and thin.

Over the years, the couple has experienced their fair share of ‘bumps in the road’. Sarah admitted that there have been times when ‘divorce looked like a good idea’, and even their four sons have commented on how often they argue. However, she emphasized that these moments are part of a healthy relationship.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, Sarah reflected on how her marriage was tested when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2022. She underwent grueling chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, and was given the all-clear a year later. At the time, she made headlines when she said her marriage was ‘hanging by a thread’, but she later clarified that she had only meant it as a ‘joke’.

Despite the difficulties, Sarah remains positive about her relationship. She said:

“There have been bumps in the road in 34 years; it would have been so boring otherwise. It’s not been perfect all along, but what relationship is? That’s the truth of it. I’ve learned in life that if you don’t have the bad times, then you don’t appreciate the good times.”

She also mentioned that her children sometimes comment on how often she and Graham argue, and there are days when she doesn’t fancy him and divorce seems like a good idea. But she added that the next minute, they see them holding hands in the garden and know they love each other. This dynamic, she believes, is healthy for their kids to witness.

A Love Story That Started Young

Sarah met Graham when she was 19, and they eventually married in 2002. Despite being together for over two decades, the couple still hasn’t officially said ‘I love you’ to one another. Sarah revealed that this became an inside joke between them, rooted in their high school days when they used to mock friends who would say ‘I love you’ after just one date and then break up shortly after.

In an interview with Prima magazine, she explained:

“I’m married to my best friend. I don’t know what our secret is, but I think having a spark of the child in you helps.”

“I met Graham when I was 19 and he was 18. We used to laugh at friends who would say ‘I love you’ after one date and then dump them the next day, so not saying it became an inside joke.”

“To this day, we’ve never officially said it,” she admitted.

The playful approach to their relationship has become a standard routine. Whenever Graham slips up and says ‘I love you’, Sarah hilariously stops him. She shared an anecdote where she once told Graham, “even if you didn’t have any money or never got a job, I’d still love you,” and had to backtrack and explain that it was just a turn of phrase.

“Every time Graham has slipped up and said it, I’ve said ‘that’s slightly yucky, could you not say that again?’”

Keeping the Spark Alive

Despite the challenges, Sarah remains committed to keeping the spark alive in her marriage. She said:

“I still like to keep the spark alive, even if life gets in the way.”

Her journey through cancer, including a double mastectomy, was documented in her 2024 documentary Sarah Beeny vs. Cancer. The film provided a detailed look at her experience, from diagnosis to recovery. She was given the all clear in April 2023, marking a significant milestone in her life.

Through it all, Sarah and Graham have continued to navigate their relationship with humor, honesty, and a deep sense of love. Their story serves as a reminder that even the strongest relationships face challenges, but it’s the ability to laugh through the rough patches that makes them truly enduring.
