Australia’s selector reveals absence of Smith, Maxwell and Stoinis in Bangladesh T20Is

Australia’s T20I Squad for Bangladesh Series: A Strategic Move

Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, has confirmed that experienced players such as Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis remain part of the national T20I team despite their exclusion from the 16-member squad announced for the upcoming three-match series against Bangladesh. The selection has sparked some debate, especially after a disappointing performance at this year’s men’s T20 World Cup.

The series will take place in Dhaka from June 17 to June 21. Alongside Smith, Maxwell, and Stoinis, fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have also been left out. The decision comes as the selectors aim to provide opportunities for emerging talent, given the demanding Test calendar that Australia faces.

Senior Players Not Forgotten

Bailey emphasized that the omission of Smith, Maxwell, and Stoinis is not a definitive end to their international careers. He stated:

“It’s not the end of the road. I wouldn’t call it dropped per se, but I understand that they’re not within the squad. But certainly, just given where we are in the cycle of T20s and on the back of our World Cup result, it’s a good opportunity, I think, to have a look at some different players.”

He added:

“I’m not taking away the fact that every time that we take a team or squad away, the expectation and our expectation is that we will win and those players will perform. So it’s a really important period of time, I think, for that T20 group to actually start to develop some different players in different roles across that. But that’s not to say that it might be the last we’ve seen of those three.”

While Maxwell has faced form issues in recent T20Is, Stoinis has continued to impress in franchise cricket, particularly during the IPL 2026 tournament with Punjab Kings. Smith, too, has remained active in leagues like the PSL and Major League Cricket.

New Talent Stepping Up

The inclusion of new faces in the squad reflects the selectors’ focus on domestic and franchise performances. Aaron Hardie, who impressed in Pakistan’s Super League, has earned a spot, while young all-rounder Joel Davies will make his debut for the national team.

Bailey highlighted Davies’ potential, stating:

“I think there’s a high degree of talent there (in Davies). Starting to see the fruits of that in some white-ball performances for New South Wales and through the Big Bash this year.”

He further noted:

“He’s a left-arm spinner as well and we’ve spoken at length about the importance of that and development of that throughout the country and hopefully we get to see a little bit of that as well.”

Balancing Franchise Cricket and National Commitments

Bailey also addressed the growing influence of franchise cricket on player availability and contracts. He acknowledged that the landscape is changing, with more options available for players globally. However, he emphasized that Cricket Australia (CA) is aware of these developments and is working to maintain a balance.

He explained:

“But there’s no doubt we acknowledge that it’s a changing landscape. Players do have options. It’s an exciting time to be a player and we’re constantly trying to strike that balance.”

This approach aims to ensure that Australian cricket remains competitive both domestically and internationally while supporting the growth of franchise cricket.
