A Controversial Decision Sparks Debate
The recent Premier League match between West Ham and Arsenal saw a dramatic moment that left many fans and pundits stunned. The game, which had been closely contested, ended with a controversial decision that sparked intense debate among football enthusiasts.
Callum Wilson, the Hammers’ striker, thought he had scored an equalizing goal in stoppage time after Leandro Trossard put Arsenal ahead on 83 minutes. However, his goal was disallowed following a lengthy delay. The decision came after it was determined that Pablo, a West Ham player, had fouled David Raya in the build-up to the goal. This led to a review by the VAR official, Darren England, who spent several minutes analyzing the incident before sending referee Chris Kavanagh to the screen for further inspection.
Kavanagh then ruled that Pablo had his arm across Raya’s chest, impeding him from catching or parrying the ball. This decision allowed Arsenal to maintain their lead and extend their five-point advantage over Manchester City, bringing them closer to the Premier League title.
Schmeichel’s Outrage
Former Manchester United and Manchester City goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was visibly upset with the officials’ decision. On Viaplay, he expressed his frustration, stating, “That decision today, it’s just so wrong on so many levels.” Schmeichel argued that if Arsenal had been awarded a free kick, it would have significantly impacted their position in the league table.
He continued, “What really makes me angry is that Arsenal would never be top of the league if that’s a free kick. That’s how they’ve scored so many goals by blocking people, holding people, doing all kind of things, and then we get to this point… it takes VAR five minutes.”
Schmeichel criticized the length of the review, saying, “Darren England the VAR official, (it takes him) five minutes. He starts the replay over and over again. That in itself puts so much doubt into that decision. It cannot be a free kick, it cannot.”

Frustration from West Ham
West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen was also frustrated with the decision, particularly the length of the delay that led to the VAR overturn. He commented, “Because we’re on the receiving end, we’re going to feel hard done by. Goalkeepers are protected more than outfield players. There’s lots of holding and grappling going on in the box. The keeper has to expect contact, there’s going to be tussles.”
Bowen questioned the consistency of the decisions, stating, “I’m sure we could go back through every single game and find goalkeepers being fouled and not getting decisions. If you’re going to give it, you have to give it to every single one that happens week in, week out. Where’s the consistency?”

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Perspective
West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo addressed the controversy with a dignified analysis of what had happened in those final seconds. He said, “There is a lack of consistency in the decisions. It is almost like a wrestling situation out there. No one understands what is a foul. The referees confuse themselves. Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not.”
He added, “Everybody is trying to see what is the frontier of what is a foul and what is not. Everybody is confused. It is not up to us to judge. It is up to them to solve.”
Mikel Arteta’s Support
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta supported the officials’ decision, praising the mentality and bravery of referee Chris Kavanagh. He said, “Probably today I have realized how difficult and how big the referee’s job is. Because you’re talking about a moment that can decide the history, the course of two massive clubs that are fighting with their lives to achieve their objectives.”
Arteta added, “A call from the refs that I think is very brave, but very consistent with what they’ve been talking about all season. So when I have to be critical, I have been. And today I have to praise them, at least for giving the option to a referee to decide.”
He concluded, “And when you look at the action in that way, I think it is an obvious error. And it is a free kick and the goal has to be disallowed. So congratulations because they made a big call in very, very difficult circumstances.”
